Power of Decisions

Power of Decisions

‘It’s not where you start out but where you’re determined to end that matters’ Tony Robbins

We often plan to do things; we even desire to do things- but do we ‘decide’ to do those things?

By deciding I mean irrevocably making up our minds, with no room for excuses.

Often, we let life happen to us and we get carried along by circumstances. And then all our plans and goals get waylaid – because we ‘let’ circumstances create us instead of us creating the circumstances.

Once we make a decision, we tell our minds that THIS is the life I want or THIS is who I want to be – in an unalterable and final way, And then our subconscious takes it upon itself to show us the way, We have to decide what we want without any doubts or uncertainty.

This is the Power of Decisions.

Have you ever realised that action seems easier once you have decided?

I remember the time that I decided to write my first book – for years I had the desire. I even had reasonable skills to go ahead and author a book, but somehow I was not getting there.

It was once at a conference that I had a conversation with a 5 time author, and he said to me, “just decide and do it’

Simple enough actually. I came back and pondered about it. And I decided to just do it!

And as soon as I decided, I started typing. I had a broad idea of what I wanted the book to be about- and as I went along, ideas kept coming and I found the going easier.

Cut to today, I’ve authored 3 books so far – and it all happened because I made a decision!

Of course, it takes discipline and commitment, but the first step is to decide what you want conclusively and then to decide which behaviours you need to commit to to get there.

Tt’s something like deciding on where you’re going. If you say, ‘ I want to go someplace’, your mind has no clear directive. It might throw up a hundred options for you to choose and decide from but it will not aid you in taking action. You will oscillate between the choices and finally, may end up just where you are!

On the contrary once you decide, ‘I want to go to Mumbai’, your mind will get you to see the possibilities and plan accordingly.’ It will throw up the actions steps for you, maybe people who know the place and can help you get there

?

So, what happens in the brain?

A lot of research work has proven that the decision-making process results from a steady communication between the prefrontal cortex (working memory) & hippocampus (long-term memory).

Very simply, when we give the brain the result we want (ie. We make a decision on what we want), the working memory of the prefrontal cortex starts to analyse it and the hippocampus(long term storehouse of memories and knowledge) starts to provide the know-how

Hippocampus enables organisms to bridge significant spatial & temporal gaps in experience. It can help us link events which may have never happened together, or happened at different times -this can greatly help in learning and preparing for the future

So, in the most simplistic words- while the prefrontal cortex analyses and decides, the hippocampus throws up the past knowledge and experiences, linking even the experiences that happened temporally separately.

In terms of the conscious and the subconscious mind, we say that once the conscious mind decides, the subconscious(or the unconscious, as we call it in NLP) makes available the resources. The conscious mind is the ‘decider’ while the unconscious mind is the ‘doer’- it follows the instructions given by the conscious mind. And while doing so, throws up all the resources required to support that decision.

The deal here is to decide - To make a decision to change or bring about a change. The ‘how’ falls in line thereafter!

Law of Attraction also talks about manifestations and how our clarity helps us. Once we commit to something irrevocably, the universe also conspires to make it come true for us. It says that you will attract into your life whatever you focus on. Whatever your energy or attention is focussed on, comes back to you.

So, if we decide to choose positives, that is what we’ll attract. That is because we decide that we want that in our lives and focus on it

What is also important is the clarity of ‘why’ we want to take that decision. Once we have a strong ‘why’ our decisions are easier and once we make the decision, most of us experience a sense of relief! It’s as if the uncertainty has been taken away and we are left with a clear, well-defined objective. All of us know much easier it is to follow a clearly defined and unambiguous goal than a hazy one!

Have you ever come across a smoker who just decided to quit on day and then there was no looking back for him? Maybe he realised the harm done to his body or he cared enough for a loved one to quite- whatever his ‘why’, once they made that decision, their resolve becomes stronger

I have attached a video of how NLP or Neuro Linguistic Programming helps us in making decisions:

How NLP helps in sustaining decisions

Now, let’s do a small reflection exercise :

I would invite you to think of the time when you made a tough but resolute decision. Reflect back on that and see how that changed the future for you

Would you like to make a decision about something today?

The way you want your life to be?

Who you want to be?

If so, go ahead and decide precisely ‘what’ you want and why you want it so strongly. Once there is clarity on that and you have unchangeably decided, watch how clarity emerges on the steps needed.
