The Power of Conviction
Dear Essentialists,
Matthew McConaughey started college to become a lawyer. But his plans soon changed. He had always been a storyteller - and now he wanted to pursue a degree in film.
Only one thing stood in his way. He feared his father, who was paying for college, wouldn’t approve of this new path. Nevertheless, he mustered up the courage to call his father.
“Hi, Pop!”
“I’ve been thinking, I don’t want to go to law school anymore, I want to go to film school.”
A bead of sweat ran down Matthew’s forehead as he listened to the silence.
“Are you sure that’s what you want to do?”
“Yes, sir!” he replied quickly.
Another silence.
“Don’t half-ass it.”
Tears welled up in Matthew’s eyes. He had earned his father’s respect. Not because of the decision to pursue film instead of law, but because of his conviction.

How often are your choices backed by this type of conviction?
Here’s my challenge for you today:
- Identify an Essential area of your life.
- Ask, “How can I act with more conviction in this area?”
- Write your answer down and commit to taking these actions.
When we act with conviction, others begin to respect us. But more importantly, we begin to respect ourselves. This makes all the difference.
In gratitude,
Greg

3 年"Alright, alright, alright...." Inspiring! Always liked Matthew McConaughey as an actor. I have no expectation I would like many actors personally. After all, successful actors must conceal and deceive us of their personality via their acting skills. But I sense Matthew McConaughey would be among very few exceptions.
