Networking involves building and nurturing relationships to – among other things - exchange information, resources and offer support. It can play a crucial role in both personal and pro-fessional development. Not to mention it’s a powerful tool for career growth. Yet, despite its benefits, many avoid it.
Research indicates countless people avoid networking because they believe effective net-workers are born, not made. In reality, successful networkers consistently work to enhance their skills. Which often makes it seem effortless to those who watch them connecting. Additionally, some think networkers exploit others. But in fact, effective networkers see relationship-building as an opportunity to give rather than take.
The core of networking is creating genuine connections with people who share similar interests. It’s a mutual exchange – in short, a two-way street - where both sides offer and receive assistance, advice, and share information related to work opportunities, for example.?
Furthermore, networking can not only help you find jobs but provide the means to explore a new profession in a new industry. With your network, you can feel confident in asking for job referrals - are encouraged to ask contacts for info on unadvertised jobs available at the company they currently work for or others they may be privy too. ??
Become a good networker and you can build a community of like-minded colleagues who not only support your career advancement but may become long-term friends. That said, make a serious effort to connect. Aside from striving to make new connections, regularly keep in touch with current connections by sharing interesting articles, congratulating them on their achievements, or simply checking in to share your experiences and ask for updates on them.
Networking is a mutual exchange; as much about giving as it is receiving. Take time to share your expertise, connect people within your network, and provide valuable resources. Intro-duce your connections to others you believe can be of help to them and provide helpful resources. If possible, be willing to provide a reference.
All that said, if you are new to networking you may ask – how can I get started?
Start by reaching out to people in your personal life, such as colleagues, friends, family, old coworkers, even neighbors. Also consider networking with others not necessarily in your field, as well as alumni and individuals in groups you volunteer or intern with.?
Effective networking depends on strong communication skills, such as active listening, clear expression, and engaging in meaningful conversations. Authentically approach each individual you decide to network with, with genuine interest. People can sense sincerity and are more likely to respond positively. Stay focused on building strong, meaningful relationships rather than collecting a large number of contacts.
5 Tips to Help You Embark on the Path to Successful Networking:
1) Approach networking with a genuine interest in others. Authentic relationships are more meaningful and lasting. 2) Have your ‘elevator pitch’ prepared. This should be a concise yet compelling introduction which briefly describes who you are, what you do, and what you’re looking for.
3) Be an active listener – listening more than you talk. This helps you show interest in the experiences and perspectives of those in your network and those you are approaching to network with. Good listeners are highly valued.

4) Networking isn’t just about what you can get it’s sharing with others. Offer value by sharing your expertise, refer them to connections of your own who may be capable of helping them find a job, share your insights and other valuable information, for example. This also helps build goodwill as well as strong relationships.
5) After meeting someone, send a follow-up email or LinkedIn message to thank them for their time and information contributed. Don’t forget to express your interest in staying in touch. Then consistently follow-up – regularly forwarding valuable articles or updates which might be relevant to them.
Which platforms should you utilize?
Finally:
Define your networking goals, whether it's meeting a specific number of people each month or connecting with professionals in particular roles. Setting clear goals helps you stay focused and motivated.
On the other hand, don’t let yourself become discouraged; networking takes time. Instead, focus on building strong, lasting relationships. Persistence and a positive attitude will pay off over time.
