The Power of Connections
I started as an industrial insulator in late 1994 and to be honest, I was an overtime junkie. I volunteered for overtime whenever there was overtime and it didn't matter what craft was working, I would give it 100% in appreciation for the opportunity to make some overtime and for the continued/repeated opportunity. Through this mentality, I built contacts and connections at a young age and valued them. I am a firm believer that you treat everyone as if they are your best clients, regardless if you work with them for the same company or size and strength of the client.
My career exploded because of this mentality and opportunities that presented themselves. Within 4 years, I was elevated to the position of Project Manager. I worked in a variety of the chemical plants and refineries around the Houston area. I remember one moment while I was working at the Valero Houston refinery, a company, that was never a client of the company, approached me with an emergency need for 1 scaffold to finish up his project and to move on to the next one. The scaffold in terms of complexity was very simple. It required a total of 10 man hours to gather material, erect and dimantle the scaffold. So without hesitation, I instructed my scaffold crews to take care of this company's needs. I did not get a purchase order or set up a job number. We simply provided the customer service to earn this company's business. I built a relationship, a business contact/connection. The company representative thanked me and told me he would keep me in mind for any future opportunities. Well to my company's fortune, the same contact/connection awarded us a $ 500, 000 scaffold and insulation job within two months.
I continued on with my career and advancements. I voluntarily made a career choice and left a company to pursue other pursuits. However, in hind sight, the timing did not provide me the pursuits I was looking forward to due to the economical turmoil that had engulfed the globe more then half a decade ago. I aggressively sought out a new opportunity with a new company. Due to a contact/connection, I was able to gain employment with S&B Engineers and Constructors. The contact/connection was a reference that I had on my resume that the director recognized and called.
As I venture off with new pursuits, the value of those contacts/connections will assist in building business and I in turn help to assist you in your pursuits. Reach out, and let's build connections together. Let's drive business to each other. Let me know how I can be of service to you to become a business partner in complimenting your service offerings.
