The Power of Connection: Reflections from Equality Now’s Global Retreat

Last week, I had the incredible privilege of gathering in person with our global Equality Now team at our bi-annual staff retreat. As a fully remote organization spanning continents, time zones, and cultures, these moments together are rare, but their impact is immeasurable. This retreat was more than a strategy session—it was a reaffirmation of who we are, why we do this work, and how we can continue to drive meaningful change over the next five years.

Strategizing for a New Normality

At Equality Now, we advocate for legal and systemic change to advance gender equality globally. Our mission is ambitious, and shaping our five-year organizational strategy requires deep, thoughtful discussion. This retreat provided the opportunity to hear every voice from? across our team—co-workers from Brazil, India, Kenya, Kyrgyzstan, USA and beyond. Every perspective added richness to our shared vision. As we look at the “new normal” of geopolitics, we explored innovative ways of how to achieve that vision through inclusive and collaborative planning.?

The Challenge and Gift of Working Remotely

As a global human rights organization, we understand the benefits of remote and flexible work. It allows us to recruit and retain the best talent from around the world, ensuring that our advocacy is truly reflective of the women and girls we serve. However, it also comes with challenges—the loss of those spontaneous, serendipitous moments that build relationships and spark innovation.

Remote work requires structure and discipline, but it can sometimes feel transactional. Even with the best virtual collaboration tools, there is nothing more magical than coming together in person—to share a meal, exchange stories, and deepen trust. And research underscores this, both McKinsey Global Institute and Harvard Business Review highlight that strong workplace relationships drive both job satisfaction and productivity and informal, in-person interactions foster creativity and collaboration in ways that scheduled virtual meetings often cannot.

The Link Between Connection and Impact

This retreat reminded me that our work is not just about policy change—it’s about people. The people we advocate for, the partners we collaborate with, and the team members who dedicate themselves to this mission every day. Stronger relationships within our team translate directly into stronger advocacy. When we feel connected, supported, and aligned, we are better equipped to drive change.

At a time when digital transformation is accelerating and remote work is becoming the norm, organizations must be intentional about fostering connection. Investing in periodic in-person gatherings is not just a practical consideration—it is a strategic imperative. It pools years of collective experience, wisdom and creativity, strengthening commitment to ultimately enhance our ability to make a difference.

Looking Ahead

As we step into the next phase of Equality Now’s journey, I can’t be more proud to lead this extraordinary team of people. The next five years will demand bold action, and I have no doubt that our collective strength will propel us forward.

To my colleagues, thank you for your insights, your candor, and your unwavering dedication. To our allies and supporters, we invite you to walk with us as we build a world where legal and lived equality is a reality for all women and girls.
