As middle managers, juggling multiple projects, people, and priorities comes with the territory. But behind every task list and project milestone, there's something bigger—a vision that ties it all together. And when your team sees that vision too, when they connect with each other and the goal in a meaningful way, something incredible happens. We might even say MAGICAL!
Today, I want to share two concepts that will help you capture the magic.
It’s a way to bring more purpose and connection to your team’s work: Gestalt psychology and quantum entanglement. I know, they sound a bit out there, but these principles can be super practical and powerful tools for goal setting and team achievement.
Here’s how these concepts can shift your team’s perspective and transform the way you all approach goals.
Gestalt Psychology: Seeing the Whole Picture
Gestalt psychology revolves around one main idea: the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. It’s the idea that when we look at something—like a piece of art, a symphony, or even a project—our brains naturally seek to see it as a complete, meaningful whole rather than isolated pieces.
In your work as a middle manager, this means shifting our team’s perspective from a “to-do” list or milestone mentality to seeing how each task is part of a larger mission.
When people see how their contributions connect to the big picture, their work feels more purposeful. Rather than feeling like they’re just checking off boxes, they realize they’re essential to bringing something valuable to life.
The best thing about this is that where purpose resides, so does motivation, creativity, innovation, and intelligence. You tap into attributes and characteristics your team already possesses and call them forth in service to the ultimate goal.
So, how do you apply this, practically speaking?
Start communicating your goals as more than just metrics. Frame them as visions that require everyone’s input to succeed. Remind your team of the bigger picture regularly, so they see the purpose behind every task, every deliverable.
When we help people find meaning in their daily work, we inspire them to bring their best, not because they have to, but because they want to.
Leverage Quantum Entanglement: The Power of Interconnected Actions
Quantum entanglement is a concept from physics that says particles, once connected, remain linked no matter how far apart they are. When one changes, the other instantly changes too.
In leadership terms, think of it as a reminder that every action impacts the whole. Every decision we make has a ripple effect, influencing outcomes far beyond our immediate team.
In the context of goal achievement, quantum entanglement is a reminder that each person's work influences others’. No one works in isolation—especially in today’s interconnected, cross-functional teams.
Think about what happens when you stack books or roll up a rug. When it is out of alignment in the slightest way at the start, the whole thing is going sideways by the time you’re done.
When someone doesn’t follow through, it has an immediate and long-term impact.
However, when something is going right, like someone going above and beyond, it boosts the whole team. What's that saying, a rising tide lifts all boats?
For you as a leader, fostering this understanding of interconnectedness helps your team take greater accountability and recognize the true value of their roles and the far-reaching impact they have internally and externally.
Want to implement quantum entanglement as a leadership philosophy? Start here…
Highlight the ways in which each person’s work depends on others and is essential to the group’s overall success. Simple things like regular cross-functional check-ins, collaborative problem-solving sessions, or even short discussions on shared goals can help remind everyone of this interconnected dynamic.
In Stephen Covey’s book, “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People,” he refers to this inter-connectedness as the paradigms of interdependence: interpersonal leadership, empathetic communication, and creative cooperation.
The magic of this is that when your team sees how closely their actions are linked, they naturally feel more invested in supporting one another. The more cohesive and connected their contributions, the more predictable and consistent success will be.
Why is this important?
When we combine the idea of Gestalt psychology—seeing the whole picture—with quantum entanglement’s focus on interconnectedness, we create a culture of unified, impactful teamwork. This combination cultivates both a shared vision and a deep awareness of the team’s interdependence, driving results that are stronger and more meaningful than any individual effort.
Let’s say you’re working on a large project with many moving parts and people. Instead of asking each team member to focus only on their task, show them how their roles feed into the end goal and impact others. When people understand both the purpose and the connections behind their work, they bring more heart, care, and responsibility to every effort.
A great way to do this is to schedule a regular meeting where the only agenda is for your team to share what it is they are working on. On the surface it may seem like each person’s role, responsibilities and activities are isolated from the rest. But very quickly, and as these meetings become a regular occurrence, the natural outcome will be visibility into how every role fit into the bigger picture. Your team will start to see themselves and each other differently. They’ll share insights, identified dependencies, and even anticipate each other’s needs.
The work you are doing isn’t just about “doing their job”—they’ll feel like they are building something meaningful together.
Practical Tips for Applying These Concepts
If the idea of combining Gestalt psychology and quantum entanglement concepts resonate with you, here are a few ways to get started:
1. Craft Clear, Unified Goals: Make sure your team’s goals are more than numbers on a page. Describe what you want to achieve together. Make that vision feel real and relatable by having everyone participate in describing what the end result looks like and feels like as if it has already happened. This creates a disharmony between current reality and the intended outcome which sets new levels of creativity into motion.
2. Regularly Reinforce Interconnections: Use team meetings to remind everyone how each person’s work supports the whole. When you can, highlight specific examples of interdependence—like a collaboration that helped solve a problem or an individual’s extra effort that lifted the whole project.
3. Celebrate Collective Wins: Recognize team achievements that required multiple people working together. Publicly acknowledging these moments helps reinforce the idea that every contribution matters to the team’s success.
Final Thought: Goals Are Bigger When We’re in Them Together
As a middle manager, you have the unique position of connecting the broader organizational vision to the daily work of your team. When you help your people see the purpose in their roles and the impact of their actions on the bigger picture, you’re doing more than achieving goals…
You’re building a team that values each other and the work they do. You’re creating a culture of achievement, not by might or force, but as a natural by-product of people being more and never less than themselves.
So, this week, take a moment to share the “whole” picture with your team. Encourage them to see their work as connected, not just to the end goal but to each other.
The more they see the impact of their contributions, the more they’ll bring the best of themselves to every project. And when that happens, it’s MAGIC and no limit to what you can achieve together.
Always for you,
