The power of community.

The power of community.

A little over a week ago, I spent 20+ hours in the car over four days to attend a bodybuilding show in the U.S.

In the spirit of full disclosure, I was tagging along with my youngest son who's a bodybuilding fan. I had no idea what this event was about or what to expect.

The show itself consisted of a morning segment and an evening segment, with an expo/meet-and-greet in between. It was all very professionally managed and well-run.

The large audience was loud and enthusiastic. Everyone seemed to be having a great time. Turns out, it wasn't any different from other events I’ve attended:

  • People willing to wait in line for hours to spend five minutes with their hero.
  • Audience members screaming their support for their favorite participant.
  • Attendees from a specific demographic that had a common culture.
  • A formal hierarchy within the community that drove its success.

On the drive home (part of a 17-hour day), I reflected on the experience. This community probably started with one passionate individual who harnessed its latent potential and built it one person at a time.

It was a powerful reminder that a common interest (i.e. context) is the most important element for creating, building, and leveraging a network.

This weeks tip: Any interest area can act as a?catalyst for creating a community. Your goal is to find the ones that fit?your interest (a.k.a.?business) and join them.

Can't find one? Take the leap and start your own. Keep reading to learn how.

This is exactly what I did 12 years ago. Though I had to shut the group down many years ago, it has been rebooted. We are in the building stage and looking forward to it taking off once again.
