The Power of Community

Previously on 97% Effective , as Founder and General Partner at R3i Capital, I discussed with Michael C. Wenderoth - Executive Coach , how I work with our partners to fill a "missing middle" in venture capital and practical steps for leveling the playing field in our industry. In this continuation episode, we cover how, as a woman in venture capital, I leverage the power of our VC networks, community, and technology to accelerate impact.

We discuss techniques for creating power through community, benefits of the virtual workplace, and ways to manage all the demands on our time -- invaluable lessons I have learned from being a global investor and working mother.

I hope some of my lessons learned can also be invaluable to you.

TLDR:

  • Principles of creating power through community building
  • What drives economic ties
  • How COVID increased global participation
  • Building that 7-floor metaverse, which protects and connects founders
  • Utilizing technology to manage your time - and empower you
  • Tips on being smart about work-life balance so you get to your end goal
  • Have a source of joy outside of work
  • The 9 minutes that matter most each day
  • Finding fun ways to share work life with your family
  • Challenging what we're told
  • Power law? Should we really "Build the first fund small"
  • Breaking the myth that no one backs a solo GP
  • Massing middle of capital that is unserved
  • Unlocking capital for sustainable goals

As lifetime advocates for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and firm believers, we must harness our affiliations, network, and platforms to level the playing field for female founders and inclusive capital for climate adaptation and climate-resilient societies. As globe-trotting super-connectors and community builders, we are working to increase women's presence in entrepreneurship through our R3i Women initiatives, Women on Board initiatives, and She Loves Tech. We have the privilege to advise, educate, speak, and write on investing in technology and the new economy.

As a moonlighting Clinical Professor of Practice at SMU Cox School and a lecturer at dozens of elite forums and institutions, including Singapore Management University and IE Business School, I am here to pay it forward. Feel free to sing out if I can support you on your journey.
