The Power of Community

The Power of Community

I didn't teach myself #datavisualization, even though I used to say I did. No, the community taught me everything I know.

And this isn't unique to #dataviz. Many of us who weren't formally trained in our work learned because we were able to stand on the shoulders of giants who came before us, read the books and watch the videos produced by those who learned this craft a bit earlier and or dove a little (or a lot) deeper than we had at that point.

Community is absolutely critical. And until pretty recently, data visualization was a practice that didn't really have a formalized community and the informal ones were pretty hard to find. But that's changed. You should enmesh yourself in this community and it will pay dividends for you, just as it has for me.

Thanks for the wonderful chat Bill Shander! Always love opportunities to talk about the ways community has shaped my work, and what we're doing at the Data Visualization Society to build more connections across our data community.
