The Comfort Zone. Possibly the most loved and most hated place in the world. We hear it all the time, the only place to grow is outside our comfort zones, to push ourselves beyond what we are used to and familiar with, that doing so is how we grow. There is truth to this idea, that we don't grow unless we explore beyond our current mental and physical limitations. But the comfort zone is a wonderful place, full of familiar, sentimental things that keep us sane and balanced. If we constantly live in a state of tension and uncertainty, it is very easy to lose our way, to forget what it feels like to be safe and secure, and to not have a base to return to when we are out on the battlefield.
Popular thinking around the concept of the comfort zone seems to look at it like a bad thing, a place of decay and stagnation, where dreams die and ambitions fade. But is this really the case? When we are comfortable, we focus and clarify, we regroup and put our thinking together for the next steps, the next fight. The warmth and familiarity enable us to function better in cold, dark uncertainty. The world we live in today is full of difficulty and volatility. Nothing is guaranteed and it is tough to see past the next few steps ahead of us. This is why a place of clarity and stability matters. Our comfort zone from where we can formulate our next steps, and launch our next attack. Without it, we are lost in the wind with no place to call home. We just need to see it as a base station that we venture out from, not a bunker that we hide in.
