The Power of the Collective: How CommunityLearning Challenges EdTech & Traditional Norms

The Power of the Collective: How CommunityLearning Challenges EdTech & Traditional Norms

The Duality of Physics and Education: Particles, Waves, and the Quantum Leap

In the world of physics, for centuries, everything was clear-cut and deterministic. Objects followed Newton's laws, moving in predictable paths, much like the structured syllabi of traditional educational institutions. This was the particle view of the world - defined, individualistic, and deterministic.

As science progressed, the wave theory emerged, suggesting that everything has a frequency and can interfere or resonate. This can be likened to the rise of EdTech platforms. Instead of the rigid structures of traditional classrooms, these platforms provided flexibility, reaching learners far and wide, resonating with their frequencies, but often in a uniform, profit-driven wave.

But then, the true revolution in understanding came with quantum physics. It proposed that light and matter exhibit properties of both particles and waves. Enter community-driven learning, like #Quantum30. It doesn't completely discard the structures of traditional education or the reach of EdTech. Instead, it merges the two, putting the learner at the center, much like the duality principle in quantum mechanics.

In this quantum view of education, learning is both structured and flexible, individualistic and collective. The emphasis is on holistic growth, real-world application, and collaboration. While traditional institutions focused on the particle nature (individual growth) and EdTech emphasized the wave nature (mass reach), community-driven models like #Quantum30 bring forth the quantum nature - a balance of both, but with the learner's interests at its core.

This new paradigm acknowledges the importance of the individual (particle) and the collective (wave) but goes beyond to create a holistic, learner-centric experience. Just as quantum mechanics revolutionized our understanding of the universe, community-driven approaches are set to redefine the landscape of education.

#Quantum30

The Essence of #Quantum30

#Quantum30 isn't just another course or a workshop; it's a holistic learning experience born from multiple experiments in self-directed learning. From fellowships to recorded courses and learning circles, we have explored various avenues. Yet, #Quantum30 stood out, combining the best elements from each experiment into a 30-day learning and creation challenge.

What made it unique?

  1. Self-directed Learning: At its core, #Quantum30 empowered participants to take charge of their learning journey. With six learning paths to choose from, each participant found a route that resonated with their interests and aspirations.
  2. Community Support: We always believed that learning isn't a solitary endeavor. Our community played a pivotal role in providing a nurturing and safe space, where participants could share, ask, and grow together.
  3. Effective Learning Tools: Drawing from neuroscience, we suggested tools and techniques that helped participants maximize their retention and understanding. After all, it's not about the hours you put in but the output you get out.
  4. Emphasis on Creation: We've seen the rise of misinformation in many fields. With #Quantum30, we aimed to ensure that our quantum community is filled with genuine creators, not mere influencers.

The #Quantum30 Oath

Our participants didn't just sign up; they took an oath. This oath wasn't just a set of guidelines; it was a commitment to themselves, to the community, and to the world of quantum computing. From committing to consistency to upholding the highest levels of integrity, each participant promised to make the most of this unique opportunity.

OK enough gyaan, let's look at the numbers, shall we?

Applications to Finishers

193 people had applied to Cohort 1, 79 Unique submissions and 26 people scored more than 21 points in the leaderboard. That's a success rate of 33% of the Unique Submissions. Impressive!

Leaderboard Score Factors:

  • Daily Submissions
  • Referral - to measure the sense of community / giving back
  • Consistency - the goal is really to instill the habit of daily learning and creation, so you can heap up and finish all in one day a week

Matching Submission Days:

  • On average, participants had about 7.97 matching submission days.
  • The top 5 participants, however, had an impressive average of 22.8 matching submission days. This suggests that consistent, relevant submissions were a key factor in achieving a top rank.

  1. LinkedIn remains the leading platform, reflecting its importance in professional networking and content sharing.
  2. Twitter follows closely, indicating its relevance for quick updates and networking in the tech community.
  3. Instagram, while less popular than the aforementioned platforms, still holds a considerable number of submissions, suggesting some participants prefer its visual-centric approach for sharing their learning journeys.
  4. Medium rounds out the top 4, being a platform where participants can potentially share more detailed learning logs or articles.

Daily Learning Ratings

Average Rating: The average rating for the day's learning across all participants was approximately 8.35 out of 10. This suggests that the content was well-received by most participants.

It's heartwarming to see so many from Cohort 1 have taken up parts of the tasks of running #Quantum30 whilst signing up for the deeper versions of the learning paths. A Community is only as good as its members and we are extremely content and happy to see how this community is being built with inspiring members

Signing off,
