The Power of Clarity

Today's article is written by my hand (or fingers) and without any assistance. :) I saw that up front because with the power of AI is it getting harder to see what is real and what is not. While I love to use AI, today I'm deliberately choosing not to. It is also because only the power of the human soul can have clarity.

Achieving Clarity after 6 years of Floundering

I have been struggling for the past 6 years as a business owner. The 'owner-operator' syndrome has had a death grip on my confidence and business bank account.

As a business owner, the best way to see how you are doing is by looking at the top line number in your profit and loss statement. That number measures your RESULTS not your efforts.

Sometimes, that can be a hard reality to face. For me, the struggle and frustration is real especially when I see other people be successful. I applaud them, and I also feel like I'm not good enough. The only thing that keeps me going is knowing that I'm not alone.

Finally Achieving Clarity

This article is really about how yesterday, July 5th, I woke up. It was like a fog had been lifting and everything came together. From that moment I achieved a whole new flow and wrote out my complete business plan in a couple of hours. Complete with financial projections for the next year.

If you have ever tried to write a business plan you know what I'm talking about. It is really hard! And not hard because words are hard, but hard because of the complete blank canvas it gives your. Completely boundless to any idea you decide to put down.

What happened? How did I suddenly figure it all out after struggling for 6 years? I was finally asked the right question. Yes, the right prompt from some random app that wasn't intended to actually help me with my business.

Here is the prompt: Describe what you do in no more than 4 words.

This one prompt forced me to distill everything about my business in such a way that it didn't allow me to over complicate it. (which I do very very often)

How to Get the Clarity you need from this Lesson

Since you have stuck with me so far, let me give back and give you the process that I just used to finally feel free from my mind and at peace with what is to come.

1. Who do you WANT to serve? Now who do you serve. May be different.
2. What do you do best in the world at? Make it into a noun not a verb. (honestly this is where I was most in trouble. I though I sold coaching. I don't. I sell Leadership Solutions in the form of coaching.)
3. Create a simple statement: I provide _______________ to _______________. Example: "I provide leadership solutions to executives and business owners."

Once you have your simple statement, your entire business plan is a bunch of questions asking specifically "how".

How to use this for other Goals?

The above prompt worked for me because I was seeking the answer to the question: What do I do? and What is my business?

So for any goal you want clarity on, you first ask yourself why you are are even trying to make a decision on that particular idea.

For example: The idea is what college degree should I get? First ask if college is the right path? A better question is: Who do I want to become? or What profession do I want to have?

You need to dig deep and keep asking yourself harder and more uncomfortable questions until you get to the root of the idea itself.
