The Power of Character: Why Clients Choose Real Estate Agents They Like

In the fast-paced world of real estate, where transactions can be complex and emotions run high, the importance of character cannot be overstated. As a seasoned real estate salesperson, I have come to appreciate firsthand the significant impact that personal rapport and likability have on client relationships, successful transactions, and building a book of business.
Character, defined by qualities such as integrity, empathy, and professionalism, forms the foundation of trust between real estate agents and their clients. Clients seek out agents who demonstrate honesty, transparency, and a genuine commitment to their best interests. They want to work with someone they can rely on to provide accurate information, offer sound advice, and navigate challenges with integrity. I am in the middle of moving right now and was thrilled to get my new home through an agent that I hired 6 years and 2 brokerages ago! I was so proud to see this person who, when I met them, was a brand agent with no experience - and has now grown so much in their career and while doing so, continues to show honesty, integrity, and professionalism throughout the process.?
Empathy is another crucial aspect of character that resonates deeply with clients. Buying or selling a home (or renting a NYC apartment) is often one of the most significant decisions in a person's life, and clients want to feel understood and supported throughout the process. A compassionate and empathetic agent who takes the time to listen to their clients' needs, concerns, and aspirations can make all the difference in easing their anxieties and building a strong rapport.
I remember wedding dress shopping. For familial reasons, we threw out our big upstate wedding plans and eloped in Detroit in front of 20 of our nearest and dearest. I had 3 months to get a dress, so I was forced to buy “off the rack”. I remember walking into the first store and them shoving me (quite literally, I couldn’t breathe by the time we got it on me) into the only dress from my list that they had onsite. It was 3 sizes too small. I never felt worse in my own body, and even though I was fighting tears, I still had the 2 women telling me “how amazing I looked” and “I needed to buy that dress” - saying whatever they could to make a sale. This happened to me 2 more times that day until I eventually went home defeated on what was supposed to be a fun, magical day. It wasn’t until a week later, when I walked into Lovely Bridal after having a 30 minute consultation with an equally lovely salesperson that she had 20 options laid out all in which worked with my wants, needs and body. I got a dress that day - and LOVED it (and her)!?
Professionalism is also essential in establishing credibility and instilling confidence in clients. Professional agents demonstrate competence, reliability, and respect for their clients' time and resources. They are diligent in their communication, responsive to inquiries, and proactive in addressing any issues that may arise. By upholding high standards of professionalism, agents can inspire trust and foster long-lasting relationships with their clients. When it comes to communication, the agent who is most on top of it, will often get the client, especially when it comes to initial outreach!?
Ultimately, people tend to work with real estate agents they like because they value the personal connection and trust that comes with it. Clients want to feel comfortable and confident in their agent's abilities, knowing that they have their best interests at heart. By embodying positive character traits such as integrity, empathy, and professionalism, real estate agents can differentiate themselves in a competitive market and earn the loyalty and referrals of satisfied clients.
As we continue to navigate the dynamic real estate landscape, let us never underestimate the power of character in building meaningful connections and driving success in our profession and remember, nothing is more cringe than a cheesy salesperson!?

March 31st was International Transgender Day of Visibility
This past Sunday we commemorated Trans Day of Visibility. It's essential to recognize and celebrate the diversity and resilience of transgender and gender non-conforming individuals in our Real Estate community and across the globe. This day serves as a powerful reminder to amplify the voices and experiences of trans people, affirm their identities, and advocate for equality and acceptance. Let us stand in solidarity with the transgender community, commit to fostering inclusive spaces, and continue our efforts to create a world where everyone can live authentically and without fear of discrimination.?
