The Power of Certainty

I am continuing a series for our newsletter to include a leadership topic along with passing along news in the nursing community. I want to focus on the positive in nursing and leadership. Subscribe to receive notification when our newsletter comes out. I publish twice a month.
Gina DeVee in The Audacity to be Queen wrote, “Queens, of course, have confidence, but certainty [my emphasis] is a whole ‘nother [sic] realm of power. This high-vibrational state of being can be likened to an unwavering faith; it’s a feminine quality, to have a clear vision for what does not currently exist and a deep knowing that in the spiritual realm it is already done.”
How certain are you that your dreams will become your reality? As the year is wrapping up, I am talking this time for rest, personal reflection, and preparing for the new year. I am wrapping up projects for 2024 (this blog being one of them), and I am anticipating remarkable things in 2025. In fact, I am certain of it. As with all things in life, there have been difficulties in business, ebbs, and flows. I can say with certainty that I can weather the storm because I have done so in the past.
Challenges await us in 2025. Challenges that will help us to grow, reach higher, strive longer, and dream bigger. What do you see for your future? Are you certain that it will come true? Gina Devee went on to say, “Unless we know in every fiber of our beings that our dreams can and will be brought into fruition and that we do have what it takes to achieve our goals, we’ll find ourselves perpetually wishing, wanting, procrastinating, and making excuses to no avail. Certainty puts an end to any slouching, recoiling, apologizing, or acting like you desire anything less.”
I am not saying that you should think that you are always right or that things will work out like you thought every time. No, I am speaking of the confidence in yourself to persevere and move forward. I am talking about the certainty that you can achieve your dreams. It is when you accept the fact that you must act and the path is clear to you.
I am certain that currently, that nursing is the right career for me. Although I have had many ups and downs, this is where I need to be. Nursing is the best career because of the options that are available and you can decide how to plan your career including your specialty, work environment, and salary. You may be saying to yourself, “yeah right,” but I would counter that just because you may be in a place you don’t enjoy now, does not mean you need to stay there. I have had positions where the atmosphere was quite toxic and the staff believed that the breakroom was bugged to working for an organization for 7 years without a raise in pay. Do you know what else I had? The certainty that I was truly a queen and that although my circumstances seemed limited, it was not so. I had choices. I chose to find another position that suited my needs better. I chose to start my own business. I chose to go back to graduate school. I chose to turn lemons into lemonade. I am certain that whatever the challenge, I can choose how I will respond. I choose me, of that I am certain.

The Progress Index of Colonial Heights updated a recent story that has shocked nurses in the field Eighteen long-term care workers were targeted for arrest after abuse allegations and falsifying records after a resident filed a compliant and then subsequently, died. The nursing home director Shawanda Jeter and director of nursing Danielle Cline Harris, were both arrested immediately. They have been denied bail and will remain in custody pending a court date in March. Others in the case were arrested on misdemeanor falsification of records charges and released.
