The Power of Breathing

The Power of Breathing

????????????. ????????????.

Breathing is natural, right?

It’s so natural, and happens so often (thank goodness ??) that we don’t realise how important breathing is!

Each of us face different challenges of different levels and it’s essential that we know how to deal with them. Many relaxation techniques start with deep breathing.

In an article published by the Harvard Medical School,

“Deep abdominal breathing encourages full oxygen exchange — that is, the beneficial trade of incoming oxygen for outgoing carbon dioxide. Not surprisingly, it can slow the heartbeat and lower or stabilize blood pressure.”

There’s loads of scientific evidence for how breathing calms our nerves and puts us in a relaxed state. These days you can do breath workshops and access different breathing modalities.

When we are breathing deeply, our parasympathetic nervous system gets activated. It sends a signal to our brain saying that we are safe. And when we are in this state, we are then able to slowly disengage from all distracting thoughts and sensations.

Here are a few steps on how to do this:

  1. Go to a quiet and comfortable place.
  2. Take a few normal breaths.
  3. Consciously start to breathe more deeply. Breathe in slowly through your nose, allowing your chest and lower belly to rise as you fill your lungs.
  4. Let your abdomen expand fully.
  5. Breathe out slowly through your mouth (or your nose, if that feels more natural).
  6. As you sit comfortably with your eyes closed, blend deep breathing with helpful imagery and perhaps a focus word or phrase that helps you relax.

Deep breathing is also very helpful when preparing to present on camera, create a video, or give a talk or presentation. Watch this video of how I do my breathing exercise to boost confidence in presenting in-camera or in person.

Now that you have an idea on how to use your breath to regulate your nerves and become more relaxed, I encourage you to make this part of your video and presenting routine.

Take time to pause before you face the camera or your live audience and allow yourself to breathe. ??♀?
