Power BI / Fabric Direct Lake Feature

Introducing Direct Lake

A Breakthrough in Power BI Data Analysis. Fabric and Power BI now boast a cutting-edge feature, Direct Lake, set to transform how professionals engage with data. For those familiar with Power BI's direct query or import modes, Direct Lake offers a significant advancement.

Microsoft's rebranding of 'Power BI Dataset' to 'Semantic Model' marks more than just a name change. While 'dataset' was deemed too generic, the term 'Semantic Model' more accurately reflects the comprehensive features and functionalities of Analysis Services data models, the foundation of Power BI (Think: Tabular Model).

Traditionally, Power BI models have been accessed in two ways:

1. Direct Query: Offers rapid development and the capability to query larger datasets. However, it falls short in performance when dealing with vast data sets. For instance, creating direct connections to ERP datasets like Oracle EBS or SAP can be challenging.
2. Import Mode: Also allows for quick development, especially when minimal data transformation is required. Yet, it struggles to accommodate large datasets within the Power BI Model itself.

Direct Lake is set to redefine these limitations, offering a more robust and efficient solution.
