Welcome to the first Data challenge for 2023.
For those who are interested in taking part in a data challenge this one is for you.
You are a newly appointed Power BI Data Analyst and have been tasked to explore and analyse HR data.
Using your Power BI skills, you are expected to provide Dashboards that answer the following questions that Top management specifically need to know which are:
- What is the correlation between an employee's performance rating and their salary, age, or job level?
- Is there a difference in employee satisfaction levels between different departments in the company?
- How does an employee's job level relate to their likelihood to leave the company?
- How does the length of time an employee has been with the company impact their salary and performance rating?
- What is the most common reason for employee attrition, and is there a pattern to when employees leave the company (e.g. by age, tenure, or performance rating)?
- This challenge is only open to those who have used Power BI Desktop to develop their Dashboards.
- For each of these questions, you could use various visualization techniques such as scatterplots, bar charts, or histograms to explore and communicate your findings.
- Your Dashboards can be as many pages as you want but they must only address the questions - avoid including analysis and visuals that are irrelevant to the questions.
- For each data challenge, I will randomly pick one entry where the person gets to book a free exclusive 1-hour call with me to ask me anything about Power BI - if I don't have the answers, I will do research and get back to you. I may also share some useful resources depending on your needs.
- To qualify for the free call you need to do the following: Please share your Power BI Dashboard on LinkedIn with the hashtags #DataMastery and the relevant challenge number e.g. #PowerBIDataChallenge012023 - also make sure you have followed me as well as tagging me in your post. Lastly, your post needs to include an Executive summary of your findings that addresses the specifics questions. What stood out for you, what patterns and trends did you observe, what actions can management take etc (see below for more). I'm looking entries that go beyond just doing standard visualisation but includes commentary / insights.
- Please don't message me about helping with your Dashboard or about finding out if you are selected etc.
A new data challenge will be shared from time to time - at this stage it will be once a month so that you have enough time to give it a go - I will try and find different datasets for each week as it is good practise to work with dfferent types of data in building Dashboards.
Tips on questions to ask yourself when looking for insights:
- What stood out to me in the data?
- Did I notice any trends or patterns? If so, what are they and what do they suggest?
- Were there any anomalies or outliers in the data that require further investigation?
- Are there any gaps in the data that need to be addressed?
- What actions can be taken based on the insights gained from the dashboard?
- Is there any additional data that could be useful in further analyzing the trends and patterns observed?
- Are there any correlations between different metrics that can be explored further?
- Are there any areas that are underperforming or overperforming? If so, what are the possible reasons for this?
- Are there any changes in the data compared to previous periods that need to be addressed?
- Are there any factors outside of the data that could be influencing the results observed in the dashboard?
Until the next challenge.
