The Power of Being Purpose-Driven in Sales

The Power of Being Purpose-Driven in Sales

In the early days of my sales career, I faced a challenge that tested my resolve and reshaped my approach to sales forever. It was the mid 2000's and a time when I was just starting to make some good money, ramping up my sales career, reputation and building a solid foundation in life, home, family, and business. It was all about closing deals, making money, working hard and playing hard. I was in it to win it, but was often tried, depressed and slowly burning out. My days were filled with meeting with customer, presenting a solution, negotiating cost, and closing deals. It was fun, but I really didn't have a north star, nothing sustainable driving me internally. My kids and wife were the motivation I had, though I was not having. great time, and knew I couldn't ?keep this up forever.?

One day, during a particularly grueling week, I had a conversation with a mentor that changed everything. He asked me a simple yet profound question:?

“What's your purpose?"?

This question struck a chord deep within me. I realized that my current path, while financially rewarding, was not fulfilling my deeper need for purpose and meaning. I was driven by external rewards rather than an internal compass.

I began to reflect on what truly mattered to me. I wanted to create a lasting impact, not just for my family, but for my customers and the community around me. I wanted to be not just as a successful salesperson, but as someone who genuinely cared about others and made their lives better. This shift in perspective was the beginning of a new journey.

I started to focus on helping others and creating value in every interaction. What could I bring to the table as far as solutions? Instead of just selling products, I aimed to offer solutions and value that genuinely met my customers needs and improved their lives. I listened more, learned how to empathize with their challenges, and sought to truly understand their needs, goals and dreams. This approach not only transformed my relationships with my customers but also brought a new sense of fulfillment and joy to my life.

My business began to thrive in ways I hadn’t anticipated. My close rate went up to almost 50%! That's right, I was closing 1 out of every 2 deals that came across my plate. The genuine care and value I brought to the table was working, was closing deals, and also building relationships. My reputation grew, not just as a top salesperson, but as a Father, Husband, and Friend ??. This holistic approach to sales, driven by a purpose to serve and create value, became the cornerstone of my life.

At home, the change was equally profound. My family noticed the difference in my attitude and energy. I was no longer just working for them; I was working with a purpose that included them but also extended beyond. This new sense of purpose brought a balance and happiness that was sustainable and deeply satisfying.

Today, My purpose is clear: To serve others, create value, and leave a legacy of positive impact. This purpose drives me every day, guiding my decisions and actions. It has brought a sense of holistic happiness and fulfillment that I never thought possible. My journey is far from over, but I am confident that I am on the right path, one that supports my family, my business, and my community in meaningful and lasting ways.

I realized that finding a deeper purpose in life, business, and sales transformed not only my career but also my personal fulfillment. This shift from merely closing deals to creating lasting value for others has been the cornerstone of my business.
