The Power of Being Proactive and Breaking Free from Reactivity: How To Embrace Proactivity in Your Life.

Most roles within finance require candidates to be proactive. As I talk to finance professionals about their career, understanding how they are proactive is important as it is often a requirement for clients listed in the job description. What exactly are the differences between being proactive and reactive?

Proactive individuals take the initiative to anticipate, plan and act in advance. They are not spectators in their own lives but active participants. Proactivity enables individuals to influence outcomes and manage change effectively. On the other hand reactive individuals tend to respond to events and situations as or after they occur. They often find themselves in a passive mode, allowing external factors to dictate their actions. Reactivity can lead to stress, frustration and a feeling of being overwhelmed.

Why are employers looking for proactive candidates?

There are benefits to being proactive, perhaps one of the most significant benefits of being proactive is a reduction in stress both for the individual and their team. Proactive individuals are better equipped to handle challenges because they have already anticipated potential issues and have strategies in place to address them. This proactive approach reduces the element of surprise and mitigates anxiety.

Proactive individuals tend to be more organised and efficient. They plan their tasks, set priorities and allocate their time wisely. As a result, they are less likely to be overwhelmed by a last-minute crisis and more able to meet goals and deadlines.? This in turn leads to increased productivity, when you are proactive, you take control of your schedule and tasks resulting in improved productivity and a greater sense of accomplishment. Proactive individuals don't wait for inspiration to strike, they create the conditions for success by setting clear goals and working towards them consistently.

Proactivity encourages critical thinking and problem-solving. When you anticipate potential challenges and plan for them, you develop the ability to find creative solutions to issues that may arise. This skill is invaluable in both personal and professional contexts.

Proactive individuals are more reliable and trustworthy, which can lead to stronger relationships. Whether it's in the workplace, with family and friends, or in a romantic relationship, people appreciate and respect those who take the initiative to address issues and meet commitments.

How to Be More Proactive

So how you can develop and cultivate skills to be more proactive in your life? Here’s a few tips:

Set clear goals: Identify your short-term and long-term goals, both personal and professional. Having a clear vision of what you want to achieve will motivate you to take action.

Prioritise tasks: Create a to-do list and prioritise tasks based on importance and urgency. This helps you focus on what truly matters and avoid being bogged down by less critical activities.

Plan Ahead: Anticipate potential challenges and obstacles that might arise in pursuit of your goals. Develop contingency plans to address these challenges effectively.

Take Initiative: Don't wait for problems to escalate before taking action. When you see an issue emerging, address it promptly. This not only prevents escalation but also shows your commitment to finding solutions.

Continuous Learning: Stay informed and keep learning. Being proactive often requires staying ahead of the curve in terms of knowledge and skills.

Develop a Resilient Mindset: Proactive individuals view setbacks and failures as opportunities for growth. Embrace a positive mindset that can adapt to change and learn from experiences.

Feels like a no brainer but as with most things becoming more proactive if you are more of a reactive person takes some effort.? The benefits though make it worth it so time to start forming more positive habits to help you become more proactive!
