The Power Of Being A Disruptive Force

The Power Of Being A Disruptive Force

Disruption is synonymous?with?“interruption.” In business, the term “disruption” means not just meeting customers’ current needs, but anticipating their unstated or future needs. This is how small companies with minimal resources enter a market and upend the established system. In other words, it comes down to a business knowing what their customer will buy and then viewing what else their customer will buy.

An on-point example is a heating and air conditioning company I worked with in the greater Sacramento area. When I started with this company they were on the smaller side and 100% of what they sold was heating and air conditioning sales and service along with some equipment replacement. When the owner sold the company, they still sold heating and air conditioning sales, service and replacement. During the time I worked with them we added the sales of photovoltaic solar, geothermal, roofing replacement, attic and wall insulation, complete home energy upgrades, lighting, residential room additions, home appliances, concrete and lighting. I disrupted their path for the greater good of all.

I met with a company last week I decided I will not be working with. They have every component needed for meteoric growth. They desire to remain in a position of comfort. I completely understand and support their unwillingness to expand and accept change. Change is a difficult concept for some and more difficult for others. This is not a slight on them in any way. We didn’t have a meeting of the minds. My ideas were more than a little disruptive to how they currently do business. I equate this with when people would tell me how much my children had grown and changed since they saw them last. I didn’t notice the changes in my children because I saw them every day.

People see their business every day. Many fail to notice the slight changes in their business or industry. Sometimes those changes are huge. Failure to notice changes can be fatal. This company didn’t see many of the fundamental changes in their industry, failed to notice how their competition had changed and multiplied and failed to see how their lack of vision was costing them and their staff money.

A question I often ask an owner is how many people are they responsible for feeding. The answer from this company was seven. After we talked about spouses, children, suppliers and everyone else who depended on them for money the number ballooned to over 75. One unacceptable form of disruption involves someone’s food supply! What should you disrupt today? ???
