The Power of Beach Cleanups
Our ocean is under a myriad of threats from pollution, overfishing, and habitat loss. The United Nations has acknowledged this urgent issue and established Sustainable Development Goal 14, "Life Below Water," to safeguard and manage our precious marine ecosystems. Disturbingly, there are approximately 13,000 pieces of plastic litter for every square kilometre of ocean, with the majority originating from land-based sources. This alarming statistic highlights the urgent need for action to tackle marine pollution and preserve our crucial ocean habitats.
How Sea Smart Makes a Difference
Since Sea Smart was established, more than 5,000 participants have joined us for a beach cleanup, covering an impressive 11 million square meters of shoreline. Together, we've collected 1,953 kg of garbage and 957 kg of recyclable materials, but there is always more work to be done. Here are three reasons why your company should participate in a beach clean-up with Sea Smart.
A Win for You, a Win for the Planet
Corporate beach cleanups offer a fantastic opportunity for both team building and environmental impact. Employees bond while working together for a great cause, contributing to corporate social responsibility (CSR) and environmental, social, and governance (ESG) goals.?Boosting CSR and ESG is essential because customers and employees are more likely to choose companies that care about sustainability and ethics, building loyalty and attracting talent.
“Sea Smart's beach clean-up was well organized from start to finish. The activities were fun and the staff were knowledgeable about marine sciences and the impact of pollution. This was a great team bonding event that I would highly recommend!" - Zac, Arc’teryx
Participating in beach cleanups boosts morale, enhances company culture, and strengthens your brand's reputation as a socially responsible organization. It’s a win-win for both your team and the planet!
Protect BC’s 27,000 KM Coastline
The ocean covers three-quarters of our planet and is home to 99% of all living space. In British Columbia, beach cleanups are vital for preserving our beautiful coastlines and diverse marine life. With over 27,000 kilometres of coastline, BC faces increasing threats from pollution and plastic waste. By cleaning our beaches, we help local wildlife thrive and create healthier communities.
Inspiring Youth to Become Environmental Stewards
100% of the proceeds from our beach cleanups fund science education for at-risk youth. We believe in the power of young people, they are passionate and ready to make a change! By teaching youth about ocean conservation early on, we help them become lifelong stewards of the sea. Our programs, including school workshops, summer camps, online courses, and shoreline cleanups, inspire a love for the ocean and a commitment to protecting our planet.
