Once upon a time, there was a young man who toiled away at a bustling factory. His mentor, an old technician, imparted invaluable wisdom, teaching him the virtues of action and continuous learning. For a decade, the young man followed these teachings with unwavering dedication, immersing himself in every aspect of the factory's operations.
When the old technician retired, the young man stepped into his shoes, becoming a technician himself. He carried on his work, pouring the same passion and diligence into every task as he had been taught. But one day, a sense of unease gripped him and he sought solace from his mentor.
Pouring his heart out, the young man expressed his frustration. Despite following his mentor's instructions diligently, working hard and staying focused on his job, he couldn't understand why others, with less experience and capabilities, were being promoted while he remained in the same position, receiving the same meager compensation as when he was an apprentice.
His mentor listened intently, contemplating the situation. After careful thought, the old man offered a surprising piece of advice: "Take a day off. Request it for any reason you like. It's time for you to give yourself a break." The young man was taken aback by this suggestion, but as he pondered upon it, he realized the wisdom it held.
Grateful for his mentor's guidance, the young man swiftly put in his time-off request and enjoyed a much-needed break. Upon his return to the factory, he was summoned to the manager's office. Expecting the worst, he was astonished to learn that during his absence, the factory had encountered numerous problems that his colleagues were unable to resolve. His absence had highlighted his indispensable role.
Recognizing his value and the expertise he brought to the table, the manager made a decision. The young man was promoted to the position of senior technician, acknowledging his dedication and encouraging him to continue his outstanding work. It was a moment of validation and gratitude for the young man, confirming that his mentor's wisdom had indeed unlocked the secret to success.
Inspired by this newfound understanding, the young man began to apply the same principle whenever he felt undervalued. Taking periodic days off, he witnessed improvements upon his return, reaffirming his importance and contributions. This pattern continued for months.

However, one day, the young man faced an unexpected roadblock. He arrived at the factory only to discover that he was no longer allowed entry. Shocked and bewildered, he soon learned that his employment had been terminated. With wounded pride, he rushed to seek guidance from his mentor, desperate to comprehend how things had taken such a wrong turn.
In a gentle but firm tone, his mentor explained that the young man had grasped only half of the lesson. He had correctly understood the importance of being noticed when something essential is absent, just like a light bulb that goes off. But he had missed the crucial second half.
With a heavy heart, the young man asked for clarification. The mentor, speaking deliberately, emphasized that the second half of the lesson was even more critical. It involved realizing that if a light bulb frequently goes off, it will eventually be replaced with a more reliable one. The light bulb that can be relied upon is more valued and appreciated.
The young man's eyes widened as the realization sank in. He had made a grave mistake by focusing solely on being noticed when he was absent, neglecting the importance of consistent contribution and reliability. Likewise, the mentor continued, urging him not to take loved ones and friends for granted, for their constant presence should be cherished and appreciated.
Moreover, the young man shouldn't allow himself to be taken for granted either. Instead, he should find a balance in life, continuing to do his work diligently and persevering even when things don't go as planned. It was a delicate equilibrium, where he neither disappeared into the shadows nor demanded excessive recognition. By striking this balance, he would find fulfillment and earn the respect he deserved.
