Many of us have felt that sense of simply going through the motions—living out roles and expectations that don’t align with who we are or what we truly want. For me, this realization hit 27 years ago after the birth of my third child. I knew I wanted to be more present, to break free from the corporate grind and work from home. Not long after, a series of life events shifted everything. I became a divorced, single mother and guardian of my two young nieces. My responsibilities multiplied overnight, and continuing to work in the corporate world no longer made sense. I had to find another way, one that gave me the flexibility and autonomy to meet the needs of my family.
That turning point led me to question everything about the traditional paths society expects us to follow. Many of us have experienced similar moments—whether through parenthood, life’s twists, or simply waking up to the desire for more control. At those times, we start to see that real autonomy—the ability to make our own decisions and live life on our terms—is the key to breaking free from the “matrix” of systems and expectations that no longer serve us.
Autonomy is the ability to make independent choices and take control of your own life without external influence or control. It's about having the freedom to govern your actions, decisions, and direction according to your values and goals, rather than being dictated by societal norms, employers, or other external forces.
Breaking Free
Living within the matrix can feel like we’re moving through life on a pre-set track—whether it’s climbing the corporate ladder, following societal timelines, or striving for material success. But autonomy gives us the power to step off that track and choose our own path. It’s about rejecting the pressures to fit into a mold and deciding what truly matters to us.
When I chose to leave the corporate world, it wasn’t just a practical decision—it was about reclaiming control over my life and how I spent my time. Long before it was popular, autonomy allowed me to find remote work that fit with my new reality as a single mother and guardian, and it gave me the flexibility to design a life that aligned with my values. For many of us, autonomy might mean pursuing paths like real estate investing, entrepreneurship, or creative ventures—areas that offer the flexibility to make decisions on our terms, without being tied to the rigid expectations of a traditional job.

Questioning the Norms
Autonomy also requires us to question the rules and norms we’ve been taught to follow. We’re often told that the path to success is linear, and many of us have grown up believing that success is defined by a high-paying job, homeownership, or climbing the corporate ladder. But when we pause to reflect and begin to question these ideas, we realize that success can look very different for each of us.
For some, it might mean building a business that aligns with their passion, while for others, it could be creating financial independence through real estate investing. We begin to see that success isn’t a one-size-fits-all journey—it’s personal and should be shaped by our values and desires. When we embrace autonomy, we open ourselves to new ways of thinking.? This is a key part of escaping the matrix: we stop chasing what we’ve been told we should want and start designing a life that reflects what we actually want.
Creating a Life of Freedom
What truly draws many of us to autonomy is the desire for freedom—freedom to choose how we spend our days, who we work with, and what we prioritize. We no longer want to be bound by someone else’s schedule or agenda. This freedom is a core part of escaping the matrix and creating a life that allows us to live on our terms.
When I left the corporate world, my decision wasn’t just about work-life balance—it was about gaining the freedom to live according to my values. For many, real estate investing, or entrepreneurship becomes a vehicle for this freedom. Whether we’re building passive income streams, starting a business, or pursuing creative projects, these paths allow us to have control over our time and energy. We decide what’s important, and we have the flexibility to shape our lives around what matters most to us.

My Path to Freedom
A few years after leaving corporate life, I was introduced to real estate, lending, and entrepreneurship when I read two books that changed everything for me: Rich Dad, Poor Dad and Cashflow Quadrant. These books opened my eyes to the possibilities of creating freedom through real estate investing and entrepreneurship. They taught me that wealth wasn’t about working harder for someone else but about creating systems of income that work for us.
Real estate and lending became my tools to build that kind of independence, to help escape the matrix and design a future that excites me.

Rejecting Fear-Based Living
Living autonomously also means breaking free from the fears that often keep us stuck. Fear of failure, fear of judgment, or fear of stepping outside the norm can keep us in situations that don’t serve us. But when we choose autonomy, we also choose to trust ourselves—our abilities, our vision, and our right to pursue a life that aligns with our true desires.
For me, stepping away from a steady corporate job and into a world of unknowns was scary. But autonomy isn’t about avoiding fear—it’s about acknowledging it and moving forward anyway. By letting go of fear-based thinking, we open ourselves to new possibilities. Whether we’re investing in real estate, launching a business, or pursuing a different kind of work, autonomy means taking charge of our future without being paralyzed by fear.

Self-Mastery: The Key to Autonomy
While autonomy offers freedom, it also requires a deep sense of responsibility and self-mastery. When we take control of our lives, we are no longer simply reacting to external forces—we must actively shape our reality. Self-mastery is about learning to align our thoughts, emotions, and actions with our goals. It requires discipline and emotional resilience to stay on course.
This journey toward self-mastery involves practices that help us connect with our inner strength and clarity. For some, it’s mindfulness, meditation, or journaling. For others, it’s the pursuit of personal growth through learning, goal setting, and self-reflection. These practices help us cultivate the mental and emotional tools we need to create a life of autonomy, where our internal world is just as empowered as our external choices.
At the heart of autonomy is the desire to live a life filled with purpose and fulfillment.
Living a Life of Purpose and Fulfillment
When we break free from the matrix, we’re no longer just going through the motions of daily life—we’re living with intention, choosing paths that resonate with our deepest values and aspirations. Real estate investing, entrepreneurship, or any other path we choose isn’t just about financial freedom—it’s about designing a life that feels aligned with who we are.
Autonomy allows us to craft our own definitions of success and happiness. It gives us the flexibility to prioritize what matters most—whether that’s family, creative pursuits, travel, or simply having more time to enjoy life. Ultimately, escaping the matrix isn’t just about rejecting a system—it’s about embracing the freedom to live a life that reflects our true selves.
Autonomy as One Path to Freedom
For some, escaping the matrix and embracing autonomy is a journey taken out of necessity, driven by life’s unexpected twists and turns. For others, it begins with a deep desire for something more. In either case, autonomy is the key to reclaiming control and living life on our terms.
We have the power to create lives filled with purpose, fulfillment, and freedom by practicing self-mastery and choosing autonomy in our daily decisions. The path isn’t always easy, but the reward is a life that aligns with our true values and desires.
