The Power of Authenticity in Leadership
The mandate for genuine and trustworthy leaders has never been greater than it is today.? We’re living in an environment where business, technology and processes are fast changing!? ?And at times - too often, it seems – so are decisions!
It doesn’t matter if you’re a business owner, C-suite executive, manager, supervisor, or entrepreneur, there is one thing that people are looking for in leaders, and that’s authenticity.
It doesn’t matter which side of the fence you’re on – or even sitting on top of it; I’m sure that we can agree that ?authenticity is a crucial element in developing effective leadership.
In this article, I am hoping that we can examine the essence of authenticity, define what it means to be an authentic leader, explore the need for authenticity in leadership, and highlights the benefits of embracing authenticity.
?
What is Authenticity?
I believe that authenticity is when your thoughts, beliefs, words and actions align with your true self.? Being able to express yourself without pretense or putting on a fa?ade; being genuine and transparent.
Authenticity means being consistent in behavior, regardless of external pressures or expectations. Authenticity includes embracing your strengths and acknowledging your vulnerabilities, leading with integrity, and staying true to your values.
?
What is an Authentic Leader?
Being an authentic leader, you’re someone who is leading from a deep sense of self-awareness and a commitment to your core values. As an authentic leader, you are genuine, trustworthy, and transparent, through which you promote an atmosphere of openness and mutual respect.
Authentic leaders are not afraid to show their true selves, and these include their imperfections - that is, their strengths and weakness!? Come on, after all, we are not great at EVERY thing!!?
The authentic leader inspires others through consistency in their words and actions. They prioritize building meaningful relationships and creating a culture of trust and collaboration.
?
Do Leaders Need to Be Authentic?
While it’s a rhetorical question, the answer is obviously “Absolutely”!?
As alluded earlier, there is a dire need for real leadership today – from top to the bottom, from left to right, from east to west!? During a time when trust in leadership is often questioned, authenticity stands out as a vital quality. ?Leaders who are authentic are more likely to gain the trust and loyalty of their teams and stakeholders. ?Leaders who want to be effective and relevant have to be living out that leadership with complete authenticity.?
It is the road to building a culture of transparency and honesty, which is essential for effective communication and collaboration.
Additionally, authentic leaders can steer through – or avoid - challenges and uncertainties with flexibility and courage, because they are grounded in their true selves and guided by their core values.
