The Power Of Authenticity: How To Detect Your Authentic Self In Your Career?

The Power Of Authenticity: How To Detect Your Authentic Self In Your Career?

Let me share a short story with you today. Two years ago, a very good friend of mine was in a good corporate job working in London…

She studied hard to have her degree from a prestigious international university, did a few internships in some very well-known leading global companies, learnt and spoke fluently different foreign languages. She did everything she could to create a perfect and smooth foundation to kick off her career.

She landed her first job in a very lucrative company in London. She got promoted twice in the first year and got her third promotion in her second year with the company. She climbed up the career ladder with such a remarkable speed. Her colleagues often envied her the position, her numerous promotions and professional success she has achieved.

In theory, everyone would expect that she should have been content, be living a happy life and enjoying a successful career. However, in reality, it was a very different story. If anyone had delved a little deeper at that time, they would have realised that she felt entirely unfulfilled.

Even though she knew that her job is making her unsatisfied, incomplete, discontent and consequently unhappy. She carried on doing her job and living her life. As time went on, I felt it was just not her anymore. She was lost and her self-worth was at rock bottom.

She then decided to have a career break and went on a “journey of a self-discovery”. A journey to discover her authentic self. A journey to discover who she truly is and what her beliefs are.

Once she started to understand what her life and career visions actually are, what she really wants, what was holding her back all that time - she got so much clarity on how she wants her life and new career to look like.

She realised that she needs to change, so she quit her job and started to work in a completely different field than she used to work. In a sector that does not require the necessity to have a master or any other degree. A sector where she can be truly who she is.

In her new job she now does what she really is. Her life has changed. She is happy, her life is fulfilled, she is content.

It is never too late and never too early to start....

I wanted to share this story with you, to bring to mind that it is never too late and never too early to start discovering your direction and your purpose. It is never too late and never too early to start getting clarity on where you truly belong in your career.

Don't compare yourself with others. Don't hide your true identity.

We tend to compare ourselves with others. There’s social pressure. There’s a significant pressure especially on young people and Millennials who want to fit in with society’s criteria of being considered “perfect” in every way.

But don’t hide your true identity from yourself, don’t overlook your natural skills. Find what you love. Turn your natural skills into something more significant in your career and life.

Reflect on yourself. Uncover your authentic self.

In these turbulent times of the global pandemic, we all have some time to reflect on different things… Why not reflect on ourselves, our beliefs and who we truly are? To uncover our true selves and embrace our authenticity?

  • Are you ready to get unstuck and uncover your authentic self?
  • Would you like to get clarity on your values, purpose, career direction and career vision?
