The Power of Authentic First Impressions: Lessons from My 11-Year Sales Career
Jeremy Bustin
I lead the customer PR program for Copilot at Microsoft AND help leaders avoid looking like well-dressed hostages in their headshots (side business). Will be in DC and Virginia in December. Message me to get on schedule.
Before embarking on my nearly 15-year journey in PR, I spent 11 years in sales where I learned invaluable lessons about first impressions, authenticity, and relationship-building. Whether you're meeting a potential client, engaging with a vendor for the first time, or exploring new job opportunities, the initial impression you make can set the tone for your entire relationship.
First Impressions Matter
In sales, the first impression is often your only chance to capture someone's interest. I’ve seen deals won and lost within the first few moments of a meeting. The way you present yourself—your demeanor, your confidence, and yes, your appearance—plays a significant role in how you are perceived.
It was a first impression I made on a client when I was selling mobile plans and phones at Verizon that led me to the field of public relations. One day, a customer told me, "You'd be good at PR," a field I didn’t know about at the time. That simple comment set me on a path that pushed me to go back to college at 26 to study communications and later enroll in a master’s program in strategic PR at 29. It’s the power of not only the first impression but also quickly establishing trust and rapport.
Authenticity is Key
People can sense when someone is being inauthentic. Authenticity builds trust, and trust is the foundation of any strong relationship. During my years in sales, I found that being genuine and transparent not only helped me close deals but also fostered long-term relationships with clients who valued honesty and integrity.
Transparency was key to my success. When I worked at Toyota as an eager 21-year-old salesman, I consistently earned the title of top salesman of the month. I recall test drives where I would share transparently with my customers the best deal I could offer them. Although this approach meant I didn't make as much commission per sale, I achieved the highest volume because customers appreciated my honesty and kept coming back.
Building Relationships
Building relationships in sales is not just about closing the next deal; it’s about creating lasting connections. These relationships are nurtured through consistent, genuine interactions. Over the years, I’ve learned that people do business with those they know, like, and trust. This is why the relationships you build in the early stages are so crucial—they can lead to lifelong partnerships and referrals.
I encourage everyone to meet people IRL (in real life). Personally, I love building relationships on LinkedIn, and that’s where 99% of my headshot business comes from. Connecting with people authentically online has allowed me to create a network that supports and drives my business forward.

The Role of Headshots
In today's digital world, headshots are often the first impression you make. Whether it’s on LinkedIn, a company website, or a networking event, your headshot is a representation of you. This image can either attract potential clients and partners or turn them away.
Why Authentic Headshots Matter
Authentic headshots are essential because they convey who you really are. They show your personality, your professionalism, and your approachability. In contrast, AI-generated headshots lack the nuance and genuine expression that only a real photo can capture. While AI technology has its place, it falls short when it comes to creating a true representation of you.
The Risks of AI Headshots
AI headshots may seem like a convenient option, but they fail to deliver the authenticity needed to make a genuine first impression. These images can appear sterile and impersonal, missing the unique qualities that make you, you. If you want to build relationships and attract more leads, you need an authentic headshot that reflects your true self.
Conclusion
First impressions, authenticity, and relationship-building are interlinked elements that can significantly impact your career and business. As someone who has transitioned from a sales career to headshot photography, I understand the importance of presenting yourself authentically. A professional headshot that captures the real you can be a powerful tool in making a positive first impression.
If you’re looking to make a lasting impact, invest in an authentic headshot. It’s not just a picture; it’s your introduction to the world.
