The Power of Association: Lessons from Barack and Michelle Obama - (Part 1)

Introduction:

In global politics, few leaders have resonated as deeply with people worldwide as with Barack and Michelle Obama. Their journey from grassroots organising to the White House is a story of political success and a powerful testament to the impact of consistent leadership and the importance of association.

As someone who has followed their journey for over 17 years, I have witnessed firsthand how their messages of hope and change have transcended borders, inspiring millions, including myself.

A Journey of Inspiration:

My admiration for Barack Obama began during his 2007 campaign, long before his presidency. I remember the excitement I felt when I received his first email in 2006.

On December 4th, 2007, I received an email that cemented my connection to his movement. The email read:

Foluke -- When I decided to run for president, I accepted that my opponents would examine my record, looking for something to attack. I didn't realise they'd go back to kindergarten. I'll respond to each opponent's campaign's desperate attacks directly and honestly. But when I respond to each attack, I want to be able to say that I am not ALONE!"

This message resonated with me deeply. It wasn't just about politics; it was about standing together, facing challenges head-on, and remaining united in adversity. It was a call to action, and I knew then that I wanted to be part of this movement.

A Personal Connection:

One of the most memorable moments in my journey with the Obama campaign came on July 31st, 2007 when I received an email titled "Dinner with Barack." The email shared a story that emphasised the importance of personal connection and listening to the voices of everyday people. It read:

Foluke -- . A couple of weeks ago, I sat down to dinner with four supporters like you. Christina, Haile, Margaret, and Michael each made a small online donation, and we flew them across the country for some good food and conversation. What I enjoyed most about this dinner was the opportunity to listen to the stories and concerns of ordinary Americans in a relaxed environment. There is only sometimes time for that kind of interaction on the campaign trail. Last week, we started planning our second dinner, and on Friday evening at 6:42 pm, a woman named Dorothy Unruh of Lakewood, Colorado, made a donation. I'm pleased to announce that Dorothy will be one of my guests for the second dinner. You could join us if you make a small donation before 11:59 pm tonight, July 31st."

This simple gesture of inviting supporters to dinner highlighted the Obamas' genuine desire to connect with people from all walks of life. It reinforced the idea that every contribution, no matter how small, played a vital role in the movement. It made me feel like a stakeholder, someone whose voice mattered, even from across the Atlantic in Nigeria.

The Power of Consistency:

Over the years, my connection with the Democratic Party in America has grown stronger. The consistent communication and engagement, even from leaders like Hon. Hakeem Jeffries , have been instrumental in maintaining that bond. On a Wednesday night, I received two emails from Hakeem Jefferies before and after he took the stage at the Democratic National Convention. The first email read:

Foluke, it's Hakeem. I'm proud to be able to represent House Democrats tonight when I take the stage at the Democratic National Convention. I'm proud to lead House Democrats as we put People Over Politics to protect democracy, lower healthcare costs, and defend freedom. I'm proud to stand alongside Vice President Harris and Governor Walz as they accept our party's nomination in Chicago. This week is just the beginning -- we need to create a massive Democratic fundraising operation to flip the House, hold the Senate and elect Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in November."

And after his speech, I received another email:

Foluke, last night I addressed the nation at the Democratic National Convention. As I stood on stage, I felt so much pride in our party, our ticket, and our progress For The People."

These messages are not just political rhetoric; they are proof of the power of association and the importance of being part of a movement that consistently strives for progress.

Learning from the Obamas:

The recent article by Peter Baker?in?The New York Times, - 'I Am the Only Person Stupid Enough to Speak After Michelle Obama, ' perfectly encapsulates the finesse and charisma of both Barack and Michelle Obama. Their speeches at the Democratic National Convention were nothing short of electrifying.

They reminded us of the core principles that brought Barack Obama from obscurity to the limelight—hope and change. Their endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris for president and Governor Tim Walz for vice president was delivered with the same passion and conviction that has always defined their public service.

Oh, Africa, Let's Move From Lamentation to Acts:

As Africans, we can learn much from the Obamas. Their approach to politics, marked by strategic thinking, consistency, and a genuine connection with people, offers valuable lessons for our political landscape.

The youth, in particular, must consider the importance of strategic planning and effective communication in electing leaders who will deliver on their promises.

It is time to move from the Book of Lamentations to the Acts of positive change.

Conclusion:

As I prepare to join world leaders and changemakers at the United Nations HQ in New York and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Goalkeepers NY event, I carry with me the lessons learned from the Obamas.

Your “Black” God Being “Black” in certain situations of power and authority seems to be the magic word that move people in a direction of idolatry. Without much hesitation, people will sell their souls to the devil and lose their place in God’s kingdom. Do you feel good, right now? The nation will be broken by God as evil has long surpassed a point of no return. The Bible speaks on the understanding of unrighteousness, unfaithfulness, evilness and stubbornness from generations that will not listen. The time has come for God to show the world once again who has the power and authority beyond the ways of evil. Who is your God? You are breathing but you are spiritually dead. The time is right now to live for the all mighty God, the Creator, of the heavens and the earth in his heavenly presence. The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and will bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom. To him be glory for ever and ever. Amen. 2 Timothy 4:18 #mentalhealth #motivation #inspiration #faith #hope #salvation #future #life #heaven #love #god #jesus #bible #soul #eternity #christ #lord #savior #socialmedia
