The Power of AI: Opportunities, Risks, and the Path Forward
Every January, I eagerly embark on a journey to Boston, where Harvard Business School awaits. It is a week filled with intellectual stimulation, engaging discussions alongside influential business leaders and global entrepreneurs, and the opportunity to learn from inspirational professors who ignite passion. This year, among others, the air was filled with anticipation as the buzz revolved around a topic that had always intrigued me but had yet to capture my full attention: artificial intelligence (AI).
The discussions revolved around the incredible progress made in recent months, particularly with the launch of ChatGPT. A resounding chorus echoed in every corner of the digital landscape, be it the realm of influencers, thought leaders, or even everyday social media users. Their posts, filled with excitement and wonder, vividly depicted the remarkable capabilities of the latest generation of language models.
Like everyone else in the group, I was filled with curiosity and couldn't resist putting ChatGPT’s skills to the test. On a whim, I decided to embark on a risky endeavor: composing a heartfelt poem for my wife's upcoming birthday.
As I poured my emotions onto the digital canvas, I marveled at the uncanny resemblance between the poem generated by AI and my own writing style. When I presented the poem to my wife, she was genuinely perplexed, unable to discern whether the heartfelt words had originated from my own hand or from the algorithmic brilliance of AI: Who knew AI could be so romantic?
In that moment, it struck me. The line between human creativity and artificial intelligence was blurring. AI has evolved to the point where it can mimic our thoughts, emotions, and expressions with astonishing accuracy. The implications of this realization reverberated through my mind, raising profound questions about the future of our society, our economy, and our very essence as human beings.
Since January, we have been witnessing a mind-boggling revolution in technology. The past six months have seen an unprecedented boom, with remarkable advancements and groundbreaking innovations that are reshaping the AI landscape like never before.
From providing recommendations, interpreting voice commands, and detecting fraud to enabling robotic surgery and driving autonomous vehicles, the applications of AI have become vast and transformative.
Almost half of all global companies are already utilizing AI, with investments projected to exceed $500 billion in 2023. More than 60% of companies plan to increase their investment over the next 3 years to create new products, improve the efficiency of their services, analyze customer service data, and save money in supply chain management.
According to a recent study by McKinsey , generative AI has the potential to contribute an annual economic value of approximately $2.6 trillion to $4.4 trillion across the 63 use cases analyzed. To put this into context, the entire GDP of the United Kingdom is $3.1 trillion.
The Dark Side
But there's a darker side to the coin. Recently, a group of leading global technology experts have warned that artificial intelligence technology should be regulated as a matter of urgency to prevent existential threats to humanity. The experts cited various scenarios in which AI could pose a danger to humanity, such as weaponization, misinformation, concentration of power, and enfeeblement.
Last month, I had the chance to meet with Tristan Harris, the co-founder of the Center for Humane Technology, who sheds light on the ethical considerations and risks associated with the rapid and widespread deployment of AI.
Harris emphasizes the profound impact of language, calling it the operating system of humanity. If AI has the power to manipulate language, it could effectively gain control over our very operating system.
As we face the implications of AI's ability to automate repetitive tasks, reshape the capitalist system and manipulate language, it becomes crucial to acknowledge and address the associated risks.
Erosion of democracy
One critical risk associated with AI is its potential to erode democracy by blurring the lines between genuine and fake information. AI-powered technologies can generate highly realistic content, including deepfake videos and text that mimic human speech patterns. Misinformation and disinformation can be used to manipulate public opinion, influence elections, and undermine trust in institutions.

The upcoming 2024 election in America coincides with a rapidly advancing AI boom, raising significant concerns about the potential impact on the political landscape. A US-based company DeepMedia reports a significant increase in the number of video and voice deepfakes posted online this year, with three times more video deepfakes and eight times more voice deepfakes compared to the same period in 2022.
Previously, the cost of cloning a voice would require an investment of around $10,000 in server and AI-training expenditures. However, recent advancements have allowed start-ups to offer these services for just a few dollars. It comes as little surprise that the latest episode of Netflix’s Black Mirror places a strong emphasis on synthetic media.
Escalating unemployment
The rapid adoption of AI will disrupt labor markets and lead to escalating unemployment. According to the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) 'Future of Jobs' report , approximately 23% of jobs will be disrupted, with some being eliminated and others created. WEF predicts a net loss of 14 million jobs in the next five years, as approximately 83 million roles are expected to disappear, while only 69 million new jobs will emerge.
This imbalance raises concerns and the potential challenges faced by those whose jobs may be rendered obsolete. Industrial organizations, such as ours, that heavily rely on automation, face the critical task of navigating the delicate balance between upskilling and reskilling their workforce.
Economic Disparity
AI's impact on employment has the potential to further widen the gap between the rich and the poor. WEF’s report raises concerns about the socioeconomic implications. While high-skilled workers who can adapt to the demands of the AI-driven economy may benefit from increased productivity and job opportunities, low-skilled workers will face difficulties in finding meaningful employment.
This can lead to socioeconomic inequality and exacerbate existing disparities. Additionally, advanced AI technologies are often expensive to develop and implement, making them more accessible to wealthy organizations.
As a result, there is a risk of concentrating AI benefits in the hands of a few, perpetuating economic disparities. We must work towards proactive solutions that prioritize the equitable distribution of AI-related benefits.
The Way Forward
Despite these risks, it is crucial to adopt a proactive approach rather than succumbing to fear. While AI possesses immense potential, it is still in its early stages and faces limitations in areas such as language comprehension and data security. The implementation of effective AI governance can help mitigate risks and ensure ethical usage. By establishing guidelines for the development and deployment of AI, we can promote transparency, fairness, and accountability.
For instance, regulations can focus on combating disinformation by requiring transparency in AI-generated content and implementing mechanisms to verify the authenticity of information sources. Ethical guidelines can ensure that AI systems are designed to respect fundamental democratic principles and do not propagate biases or discriminatory practices.
Indeed, we find ourselves standing at a significant crossroads. The pace at which the field of AI is advancing is unparalleled. The next five years will shape the course of the next century, making it all the more crucial for us to act swiftly and decisively. In the realm of AI, every single day holds the weight of a month in traditional business.
As leaders, we must channel our efforts towards training new talents to harness the power of this technology and reskilling our organizations to adapt to the changing landscape. It is important to recognize that in the future, we may find ourselves longing for the chance to have begun our journey today.
There are numerous pressing global issues that people are eagerly anticipating AI to finally assist in solving, such as climate change, chronic illnesses or traffic fatalities. While the potential benefits are endless, we must acknowledge and address the risks of mass adoption.
By implementing regulations, fostering transparency, and investing in education and reskilling programs, we can navigate the path forward in a way that ensures the ethical and responsible use of AI.
Embracing AI as a tool that empowers human potential, we can pave the way for a future where technology and humans coexist harmoniously. This partnership holds the key to fostering innovation, solving complex problems, driving economic growth, and advancing societal progress.

1 年That’s how I learned about the existence of AI. My kids, 13 and 11 years old, presented to me unbelievably moving poems (each very different) about us and why they love their mother as a new year gift to me. Such an exciting times ahead for those who will welcome this technology with open arms and moral intentions.
