The Power of Action

Recently I was asked to come and speak at the first ever forum in Russia around Women Executives, with some of the prominent figures as key speakers. I was asked for a motivational speech, TEDx style, aimed to inspire thousands of young women.
I was horrified but I did it.
Since then I have taken on the challenge to excel at public speaking. I have delivered multiple talks, podcasts and my first masterclass to encourage women and migrants to dream big and start taking action.
This experience reminded me of the numerous times I challenged myself.
I was not always successful. For a long time, I struggled with confidence.
My parents had mental health challenges. I was brought up by my grandmother in Solntzevo, which is mostly known for Solntzevskaya mafia, one of the biggest and most dangerous in Russia. She did not have an education and she wanted me to be a housewife. I did not have role models and I did not think I could be successful. I was afraid.
I challenged myself. I raised my standards. I took action.
I won numerous Olympiads in Mathematics, I graduated from some of the best universities in the world, I worked in top international companies.
I failed, got back up and tried again.
I came to UK as a graduate in consulting, and I did not know anyone here. When I joined, I was different: I looked different, talked different and was treated as an ‘anomaly’. I tried to change to fit in, but that did not work for me. It was important for me to accept my individuality and to use it to get to the right outcomes. I learnt to be proud of who I am.
I am proud that I did not give up when I was told I will not be successful in consulting. I am proud I chose to believe in myself and continue to grow in the Technology sector. For me it is key that whatever your job or gender you will always need to put in the effort.
In 6 years, I grew from a graduate to a senior manager. I was recognised by several awards in Technology. I have an exciting job with a lot of variety, an international network, and a much better lifestyle. I am part of the ‘RaiseYou’ initiative at KPMG, which supports the progression of diverse talent.
I really believe that all of you can be successful. Set high standards, set goals and achieve them.
Don’t wait for inspiration to come to you. Just get up off the sofa and take action today. It might not happen immediately, but in the process of taking action the inspiration will come to you.
Just do it – make your dreams come true.
Well done Alina. You have talent and determination. It's a great combo.
