The Power of Acknowledgement

The Power of Acknowledgement

If you’ve been on the journey for me with a little while you know I talk about speed as being a really critical piece in today’s marketing place. In fact I often say that speed is a competitive advantage and I really believe that.  The old adage of time kills the deal is certainly true when it comes to customer service or dealing with new prospects or getting back to an existing client.

How do we make sure that speed is one of our top priorities?

Here’s a quick little idea for you - it’s called the power of acknowledgement.

Now a lot of people don’t quite get this idea but boy, it’s a powerful idea. And that is, when someone sends you an email, sends you an SMS or phones you, how quickly you get back to acknowledge receipt of that email, that phone call, that SMS is absolutely critical.

The fact that you may not have the answer right then or the fact you have to look into it or get the answer is ok; it’s a separate issue.  But the issue is how well that you acknowledge receipt of that email, of that SM, of that phone call. And in my world what I try to do is to make sure that when someone sends me an email that I send them a response back quickly even if I don’t have the answer or even if I can’t work on it right now to let them know I have it.

So the answer is a very simple answer and yet it works so well and that is when someone emails you from now on could please get back to them quickly.  I’m talking real quick and say: Got it! Thank you! Noted! I’m getting back to you! I’m working on it! Just to let people know you are responsive and that you are working on it.

There is nothing worse than sitting at the other end of an email saying, did they get it? I don’t know where they are at? Days have gone by. This is not where the market is today. We must, must let people know that we have received the email and send them acknowledgment that we are working on it.

Leave it with you.  It’s a great idea I think because it’s worked for me and I hope it works for you.

You make a great point Brad - it's so important that people get an acknowledgment. Research I've done with clients over the past decade shows the #1 frustration people have with email is 'Getting no response to my email when it clearly requires a response or the response is too slow'. If I may, I'll add to this post later with details of how you can set up a one click "Got it, thanks" button in Outlook to make sending an acknowledgement very quick and easy.
