Have you ever told yourself, “I’ll make an exception just this once”? It seems harmless in the moment, but according to Clayton Christensen, these small exceptions can lead to bigger problems. Christensen argues that it’s actually easier to live by your principles 100% of the time than just 98%. Why? Because once you allow one exception, it becomes easier to justify the next, and then another after that. What started as a one-time exception soon becomes a recurring pattern.

Let’s take a simple example: Imagine you decide never to lie, no matter the circumstances. If you stick to this rule 100% of the time, there’s no hesitation. You don’t have to question yourself every time you’re tempted to tell a lie. The decision has already been made, and your life is simpler because of it. But if you allow yourself to lie “just a little” in certain situations, then every time you face a potential lie, you have to decide if this is one of those exceptions. This creates ambiguity and adds mental stress.

The problem with ambiguity is that it’s dangerous. Each small justification opens the door for the next, and over time, your values can erode. What started as a minor exception becomes a habit, and eventually compromises your integrity.

Christensen points out that this idea applies to both personal and professional life. In leadership, for example, leaders who consistently adhere to their principles inspire trust and create a strong culture within their teams. If, as a leader, you decide to make “just a small exception” to your values, it sends a confusing message and weakens the cohesion and respect of your team.

So, how do we apply this idea in our daily lives? It’s about identifying your core principles and committing to them fully. When you choose to live 100% by your values, you eliminate the need to constantly justify your actions. Your decisions become clearer and more consistent, reinforcing your sense of identity and purpose.

Sticking to your principles 100% of the time isn’t always easy, but it’s a path that simplifies your life and strengthens your integrity. Next time you face a decision, ask yourself: Am I willing to make an exception? Or do I prefer to stay firm and avoid the ambiguity that comes with a 98% commitment?

Remember, it’s easier to be consistent 100% of the time. We’ll see you in the next episode, and as always, stick to your principles… and stay in the flow. ??
