A Potential Cure for Procrastination
Enrique Fiallo
I have learned, through my own experiences, that great Leaders make decisions differently, based on core values, making gray areas disappear, and stating choices in black and white terms.
This is an honest effort to get us all thinking about a few things - Reality, Legacy, Mortality, Procrastination, and our Future. It is not meant to be morbid, negative, or depressing. It’s just truth and certainty.
Make a 10 x 10, 100 box grid, and depending on whether you are a male – Life Expectancy 76 US, 80 Canada – or female – Life Expectancy 81 US, 84 Canada (kind of makes you think about moving to Canada if you are in the US!) – do the following.
If you are a US male, starting from the right bottom box (age 100), X out 24 boxes working right to left. If a Canadian male, X out 20 boxes right to left.
If you are a US female, X out 19 boxes, and if Canadian, X out 16 boxes.
Now, starting at the top left of the grid, place an X in each box until you reach your current age. So, if you are 40, you would X out 40 boxes, 50 boxes if you are 50, 60 if you are 60, etc.
The boxes that are left represent on average, how many years you have left. More or less. Remember, these are averages. Our life spans vary based on a number of factors. This is meant to illustrate a point and to get us all thinking.
Now, if you really want to see how much effective time we all have, X out another 25% to account for the time we are awake, and can get anything done (besides sleep that is).
So now, how do we feel about procrastinating, putting things off, spending valuable time on low priority activities, indulging destructive habits and preoccupations, and in general, wasting our precious time?
