Maternity and Midwifery Forum
VIDEO & EVENTS FOR MIDWIVES & HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS WORLDWIDE ??
Elizabeth Duff, previous Senior Policy Advisor for the NCT
Postnatal care is an important aspect of midwives’ roles in the UK and other countries. It is also important for women and families, yet it is known that it is a challenge to meet needs appropriately, especially in the current climate of staffing. Elizabeth Duff, until recently Senior Policy Advisor for the NCT, shares her concerns about the lack of action on postnatal care and encourages us to use International Women’s day as a platform for change.
Improving data on brain injury around the time of birth: review and consultation
Sarah Clark
Brain injury around the time of birth may have serious consequences. Yet the data available around these circumstances is inconsistent. Sarah Clark, Research communications manager, and Jan van der Scheer, PhD, Senior Research Associate, The Healthcare Improvement Studies Institute (THIS Institute), University of Cambridge highlight the work that is being done to improve data collection as part of the Avoiding Brain Injury in Childbirth (ABC) programme.?
This episode focusses on Research in midwifery – a different view.
Research methodologies are argued to be Eurocentric and do not cater for non-Western cultures. There should be respect for all knowledge regardless of the source and all knowledge should be valued. Due to the diversity of women and people giving birth in the UK, their views matter but the chosen research methodology may restrict their participation in studies. Consideration of non-Eurocentric research methods are therefore important, as individuals may be uncomfortable expressing their experiences through Western approaches. An exploration of alternative research methods that can capture the experiences of mothers are important ensuring their needs are reflected in maternity guidelines and policies. These alternative methods may therefore include a more holistic, reflective and creative approach in line with a midwifery paradigm.

1 周It is no accident that the poor delivery of care is associated with having no medical specialty governing this time period. Without this, funding will not occur. Whilst midwives have been trained in this area, we are quite often unable to practice due to both this time period not being given the attention it deserves and the lack of funding. The focus of our maternity services remains on pregnancy and birth. The morbidity and mortality rates of women in the post birth period is a disgrace. They deserve better!!!
