Postcards from Retirement (Part I)
I retired to Sarasota, Florida on June 1st, after 35 plus years in the professional world. Retirement has been more than I had hoped for. OK, it’s only been 4 months, but I thought I might write every 3-4 months about what I’ve been doing and lessons I’ve learned.
One thing I’ve learned (and that I like!) about retirement, is that I now control my time and can pursue endeavors about which I’m passionate. One such endeavor is supporting the Women’s Sports Museum (WSM), which is being built in Sarasota, Florida (which is how I got involved). The idea for the Museum was sparked by a former All-American Girls Professional Baseball Player. The initial concept was to build a museum for professional women baseball players (think A League of Their Own), but once WSM’s founding board members learned that there isn’t a single museum in the world dedicated solely to women in sports, the focus changed. WSM is the only museum in the world devoted solely to women in sports — all women, all sports. The mission of the WSM is simple: To inspire girls through the power of sports. There is much research showing how sports helps girls in a variety of ways, including building confidence, fostering team work and learning leadership skills. While the focus is on female athletes, we feel that men and women, boys and girls, will find it interesting, educational and inspiring.
As we bring to fruition the dream of building the physical museum, I’ll keep you updated. And, I’ll be back in a few months with another postcard. In the meantime, if you would like to learn more, visit www.womenssportsmuseum.org And please feel free to share what sports have meant to you.
