Post Medium Term Budget Policy Statement Dinner 2023
Cape Town was beaming with both excitement and anxiety in anticipation of the Medium Term Budget Policy Statement (2023) to be delivered by the Honourable Minister Enoch Godongwana .
We witnessed a rather well served compendious statement posed by the Minister indicating key issues in the country that are and have been pain points since the Budget speech in February 2023.
The ABSIP National Executive hosted a Post MTBPS dinner with the Minister of Finance and the Senior leadership at the National Treasury. It was also a great opportunity to congratulate the new National Treasury Director General Dr Duncan Pieterse .
While breaking bread with the Minister, some of the key focus areas for ABSIP, without overlooking the painful debt service costs elements, were that we are experiencing a rather challenged fiscal framework in relation to poor revenue performance, public sector wage increases, and reduced corporate profitability due to various factors and the need to scale up meaningful infrastructure investments.
ABSIP is particularly intentional to drive the conversation to foster Private and Public sector collaboration in the financial services sector, particularly leveraging the sector’s technical expertise. The support and growth in infrastructure investment is one of the key points to assist in providing sustainable economic growth. To unwind the evening, a couple of collective wisdom from all stakeholders was shared in view of realizing a set vision for a sustainable fiscal framework.
