Post-election pulse: The top narratives driving public interest

Following Donald Trump's victory, the nation finds itself at a pivotal moment. As we're writing today's newsletter, Republicans have officially won control of the US Senate, marking their first majority in four years. Meanwhile, control over the House of Representatives is still up for grabs.

Election coverage is soaring, with 74k articles published since this morning, and over 2.6 million engagements (and counting) with those articles. This marks a 102% increase in engagements compared to the same time period yesterday.

Looking at web coverage and social posts across all platforms, it's clear that conservative publishers are driving the bulk of this interest, and Fox News is at the forefront. Fox is responsible for the top article overall, reporting on Kamala Harris not making a statement last night, as she plans to address the country later today. On social, it's the publisher's projection of Trump's win that captured the most attention, with its Facebook post earning 251k engagements, while on TikTok it broke 1 million engagements.

Several key figures have also sparked interest with their reactions to Donald Trump's win. The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, the President of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, and Israel's Prime Minister,?Benjamin Netanyahu, have all earned hundreds of thousands of engagements on X with their congratulatory posts.?

And Trump himself has also had three of the top 10 posts on Instagram today — a platform that he has consistently seen huge engagement on in the run up to the election, as we've previously highlighted.?

Although it's too early to be certain, this election result could signal the return of the heightened levels of public interest in news that we saw during Trump's first term. Whether you’re leading a newsroom, responsible for brand communications, or advising clients, you can stay ahead of this intensified political landscape with our daily election AI digest, which will deliver the most engaging election stories and themes to your inbox until November 30th.

News influencers command TikTok

Amid the flood of election coverage from publishers on social, we can't overlook the big phenomena coming out of TikTok — the rise of news influencers.?

These influencers have built massive followings by offering commentary and engagement about events from around the world, and the US election has propelled them even more into the spotlight.?

Dylan Page is a popular example of this, with his posts often seeing hundreds of thousands, if not millions of engagements, and his election coverage was no different.

In the last 24 hours, Page has generated over 963k engagements from two videos about the election, with his breaking news report about Trump officially being named the winner?sparking the most attention.?

Influencers like Dylan Page are playing an increasingly pivotal role in driving these type of conversations, and that is something we see continuing as we head into 2025.
