Post-Crisis Growth

Now Is the Time To GYST. GYST: Get Your Shit Together.

To say it's been an unusual year is definitely an understatement. To some of us it's been a bit of a blur with days dragging and weeks flying, to the rest of us we've just hit our stride and are in flow. It seems that we all fall in either one camp or another: you may be recovering from Zoom fatigue, potentially reeling from the lack of physical closeness or conversely you could be feeling empowered and confident to soldier on. Where are you sitting on the "COVID Emergence" scale?

It's definitely been a period fuelled with uncertainty and confusion yet, surprisingly, all of this has played out against a backdrop of increasing clarity. Clarity with regards to desire, direction and why discipline is a non-negotiable. Desire in terms of what we want, direction in terms of where we need to get to and discipline in terms of our habits, our boundaries and our time. With this new found clarity, it's the perfect opportunity to take stock. Acknowledge the negative emotions you've been experiencing and engage values-based action to grow.

Let's Reflect

When you review the goals that you set for yourself at the beginning of the year, how are you travelling? Identify your wins. Do your goals still align with your why? Are they congruent with your values and what matters most? What strengths have you been using to support you in your goal pursuit? Where are you falling short in terms of progress? What do you need to implement to drive forward momentum? Are there others who have expertise that you can draw on (in order to make progress)? What have you learned in the last 6 months that will help you make the adjustments needed to propel you forward?

How are you feeling? Physically? Psychologically? Emotionally? Behaviourally? Take notice.

Let's Recover

Don't feel guilty about taking some time for YOU. You not only deserve it, but you've been working your tail off for the past 6 months and you NEED it. We actually need to be filling our own tank on a regular basis, but many of us neglect to do so. We tend to operate full-throttle until we stop. This BURNS US OUT. Our bodies and our brains need time for regular recovery. Performance expert Andrew May talks about this in his latest book "MatchFit" and goes one step further, offering weekly recovery activities that feed your personal resources, ensuring you are equipped to deal with the challenges ahead.

Let's Refocus Our Efforts

Time to adapt and adjust. How do you want to feel over the next 6 months? It's the end of the year, you've achieved all of your goals, how are you feeling now? What milestones have you set for yourself en route to achieving your goals? How will you reward yourself upon accomplishing each milestone? What obstacles might you encounter and how will you overcome them? What habits and behaviours will support you in your goal pursuit? Make them your non-negotiables. What activities will help you recharge along the way?

Despite the challenges you've faced up to this stage of 2020, you can learn from the experience and emerge stronger. Take the time to reflect, refuel and refocus your efforts. Similar to 'post-traumatic growth', post-crisis growth is when you're able to learn and grow from the crisis in order to emerge post-COVID stronger. It's within your control, your mindset will determine your future success.
