Post #8 – Reflections from Certification EDB Volunteers

Reflections from a 3rd-year Exam Development Board member:

Q: What is your name, title, and board affiliation?

A: Arsen Kourinian , Partner at Mayer Brown LLP, Advisory Board Member – CIPP/US Exam Development Board

Q: What do you wish others knew about the work of the EDB?

A: The EDB does a great job at putting data privacy professionals together who can brainstorm about the latest privacy developments and ensure that the CIPP/US exam stays current.?Through our collective efforts, we are able to address which topics should be part of a data privacy professional’s foundational knowledge and think of ways to convey those topics through exam questions.

Q: What do you think was the greatest accomplishment of the EDB?

A: The data privacy landscape is rapidly changing, with developments almost every day.?The EDB’s great accomplishment is seeing the forest from the trees by analyzing these developments and considering ways to incorporate them in exam questions.

This is a very difficult task and requires strategic decisions regarding which topics are critical and which are less of a priority for purposes of the exam.

Q: What changed for you from your first year to your final year?

A: From my first to current year, I was able to develop more in-depth exam questions that better measure an exam taker’s foundational knowledge of data privacy issues.?I give credit to the great folks on EDB for providing guidance on exam writing strategies, which paid dividends.

Q: What do you think you will take away from your board service?

A: My main take away from my board service is greater appreciation of the great work IAPP is doing to train the next generation of data privacy professionals.?Taking the CIPP exams is an important first step for new data privacy professional to validate that they have learned the basics of data privacy laws.?The CIPP exams also provide strong credentials for experienced data privacy professionals who want to demonstrate their knowledge of data privacy laws.?The IAPP is the main organization leading this charge in the data privacy profession and I greatly enjoyed contributing to those efforts.
