Is it possible to lead from behind?

Is it possible to lead from behind? The nature and meaning of the word “leader” make this construct difficult to even consider. I recently had the privilege of hearing the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis perform. There was no conductor in front directing the band. Their leader, Mr. Marsalis, who happens to be one of the greatest trumpet players of all time, a world-renowned, nine-time Grammy award winner, stood on the back row with the other trumpet players. Which led me to ask the question, is it possible to lead from behind in this and other domains? I began to observe more intently his leadership, and here is what I discovered:

  • Most of the songs played were arrangements or compositions by fellow band members. In each case he let the composer kick off the tune.
  • At the end of each song, Mr. Marsalis gave a thoughtful acknowledgement to everyone who had performed a solo.
  • Throughout the course of the concert, every individual had at least one opportunity to perform an improvised solo.
  • Communication was non-verbal, but obviously apparent as the entire band knew when each soloist was wrapping up, and when the song was ending. As great as performers as they were, they were even better observers and listeners.

A couple questions to consider:

1. Do you believe it is possible to lead from behind?

2. Where have you observed effective leadership from behind? Please share examples in the thread here.

3. In your current life situation, what opportunities do you have to lead from behind that you may have initially overlooked because you aren’t in front, or don’t have a certain title, or someone else is “in charge?”
