Is it possible to laminate aluminium?

There are windows where the thickness of the profiles is reduced to a minimum. This is the case of large glazed windows, which are very common in the living areas of homes where brightness is the most important factor, or in the offices of large modern buildings covered with glass or aluminum sheets. Aluminium-clad doors are also becoming increasingly popular.

Aluminium, like PVC, can be laminated using many types of foils that make it very customizable without losing the mechanical strength inherent in this type of material.

But let's now analyze how this material can be foiled according to the installation in indoor or outdoor environments.

Aluminium handles, kitchen plinths and many other indoor applications

Wrapping aluminium means being able to combine the mechanical resistance of this material with a unique aesthetic finish. It is well known that in furniture, small details make the difference.

If aluminium is used for furniture or components inside a home or office, it is sufficient to perform an in-line brushing process to remove the oxide and all defects derived from extrusion. Once brushed, the surface is ready to be laminated.

The choice of HMPUR glues allows the aluminium parts to be used in humid environments with significant temperature changes such as bathrooms and kitchens.

The world of aluminium and PVC windows

There is a special type of aluminium profile, also called alu clips, that fit onto PVC windows.

This type of application makes it possible to obtain a window with excellent insulation (thermal and acoustic) while increasing the aesthetic value (thanks to aluminium). In addition, with this mix of materials, the overall cost of the window is lower than an all-aluminum window, while maintaining the same appearance.

Process steps of the lamination of aluminium installed outdoors

If the aluminium profile or component is intended to be installed outdoors, it must be coated with polyester or polyurethane-based paints. Before lamination it is necessary to apply a primer.

This, in fact, will guarantee the product a high resistance to weathering.

Also, in this case, HMPUR glues are the most suitable given their resistance even in the most extreme climatic situations with a strong temperature range, heat, and humidity.

The most complex aspect to manage is the setting of process parameters that must be carefully configured to obtain quality wrapping results.
