Some might say they don't have other responsibilities besides work, but I personally know academics who have achieved a healthy work-life balance while being actively involved as parents and spouses. Regardless of our chosen career path, whether we are academics, lawyers, CEOs, cashiers, journalists, or freelancers, we all share the yearning for a better balance between work and personal life. It's not necessarily about wanting to escape our current work situations—although that may be true for some—it's about finding that equilibrium that allows us to thrive in both areas.
Let's consider mid-career academics as an example
This stage of an academic career often inundates us with various responsibilities, from teaching and student supervision to paper reviews, grant applications, committee requests, etc. It's during these mid-career years that many academics start questioning if they can achieve a satisfying balance between their professional commitments and personal well-being. This is when the desire to leave academia starts invading our minds as academics.
