Is it possible to discuss the news with a bot?/?Es posible discutir las noticias con un bot?

Imagine waking up early in the morning, enjoying a good cup of coffee and asking your virtual assistant Alexa to tell you today’s news. Alexa reads out loud the main article of your favorite newspaper which reports on the electoral campaign kickoff in your city and the candidates’ public events. But some questions arise: What is the proposal of candidate?X?regarding environmental matters? Has?candidate?Y?been involved in corruption cases in past positions? Which of them is leading the polls right now?

Alexa reads the news, but would it be possible that you can comment and discuss the content of news articles with her as if you were talking to a friend?

To know how crazy this idea is, I interviewed?Amy Stapleton, co-founder of Chatables, a company that builds voice applications for assistants, virtual care providers, and other speaking devices.

But first I will define the concept of?Conversational Artificial Intelligence (AI), which according to IBM, refers to technologies, like chatbots or voice assistants, which users can talk to. They use large volumes of data, machine learning, and Natural Language Processing (NLP) to help imitate human interactions, recognizing speech and text inputs and translating their meaning across various languages.

Some of the applications of this technology are customer support, HR processes such as recruiting, onboarding and training, health care services assistance and the popular Internet of Things (IoT) devices such as Amazon Alexa, Apple Siri, and Google Home.

Regarding the news media industry, Stapleton, who is an Amazon Alexa Champion and a former IT NASA manager, tells us the following:

1. How are media companies currently using Conversational AI?

BBC is using a customized voice assistant named Beeb to deliver the news. And I know that Quartz was doing something vaguely similar to a news chatbot, but it was nowhere near what I’m envisioning in terms of its ability to converse in a natural and personalized way.

2.?How far are we from having technology that will allow us to talk about news with a bot?

There is nothing missing, we have all the pieces required to build a conversational news bot. Technology has given us the ability to understand and generate natural language; ingest structured and unstructured information sources and accurately summarize the knowledge they contain; and answer specific questions about the information. In fact, the company Pryon is already delivering a similar experience for enterprise customers.

3.?How expensive would it be to develop a conversational news bot?

I can’t tell you how expensive it would be to build it. I think many of the components are available at low cost. But you’d need extensive experience in NLP and Machine Learning and lots of trial and error.

4.?What would be the benefits for media outlets if they offer a service like this to their audience?

The value of these intelligent conversational assistants is so evident that we will see the market moving towards that direction. Consider how much value you could obtain by having access to an AI like this one. Not only for the time you would save in catching up with the latest news. The AI can consult many more sources of information than a human could read. And if it is trained for that, the bot could present different points of views about the same topic and potentially help you decide which one has more merit.

As a news consumer, how much value would it add if you were able to ask your virtual assistant for further information and have a conversation with it? Would you be willing to pay for a subscription in the newspaper of your preference if they included this service?

Para saber qué tan loca resulta esta idea entrevisté a?Amy Stapleton, co-fundadora de Chatables, empresa que construye aplicaciones de voz para asistentes, cuidadores virtuales y otros dispositivos parlantes.

Pero antes definiré el concepto de?Inteligencia Artificial Conversacional, que de acuerdo con IBM se refiere a tecnologías, como chatbots o asistentes de voz, con las que los usuarios pueden hablar. Utilizan grandes volúmenes de datos, aprendizaje automático y procesamiento del lenguaje natural para ayudar a imitar las interacciones humanas, reconociendo las entradas de voz y texto y traduciendo sus significados en varios idiomas.

Algunos de los casos de uso de esta tecnología son el soporte a clientes, procesos de Recursos Humanos como reclutamiento, inducción y entrenamiento, atención en los servicios de la salud y los populares dispositivos de IoT como Amazon Alexa,?Apple?Siri?y?Google?Home.

Respecto a la industria de los medios, Stapleton, Amazon Alexa Champion y ex gerente de TI en la NASA nos comenta lo siguiente:

1. ?Cómo están usando los medios de comunicación la IA Conversacional actualmente?

BBC está usando un asistente de voz customizado llamado Beeb para entregar las noticias. Y sé que Quartz estaba haciendo algo vagamente similar a un chatbot de noticias, pero no estaba ni cerca de lo que estoy visualizando en términos de la habilidad de conversar en una forma natural y personalizada.

2.??Qué tal lejos estamos de lograr que la tecnología sea capaz de conversar con un ser humano el contenido noticioso?

No hace falta ninguna tecnología, tenemos todas las piezas requeridas para construir un bot de noticias conversacional. La tecnología nos ha dado la habilidad de entender y generar lenguaje natural; consumir fuentes de información estructurada y no estructurada y resumir con precisión el conocimiento que contienen; y contestar preguntas específicas sobre la información. De hecho, la compa?ía Pryon ya está entregando experiencias similares a sus clientes empresariales. Lo que sí está garantizado es que el construir este bot conversacional no será fácil.

3.??Qué tan caro sería desarrollar un bot de noticias conversacional?

No puedo decirte qué tan caro sería construirlo. Pienso que la mayoría de los componentes están disponibles a bajo costo. Pero necesitarías a alguien con amplia experiencia en Procesamiento Natural del Leguaje (NLP por sus siglas en inglés) y Machine Learning y mucho entrenamiento a prueba y error.

4.??Cuál sería el beneficio para los medios de comunicación al ofrecer este servicio a su audiencia??

El valor de estos asistentes conversacionales inteligentes es tan evidente que veremos el mercado moverse hacia esa dirección. Consideremos cuánto valor podrías obtener al tener acceso a una IA como como esta. No es sólo por el tiempo que ahorrarías en ponerte al día con las últimas noticias. La IA puede consultar muchas más fuentes de información que un humano pudiera llegar a leer. Y si está entrenado para eso, el bot podría presentarte diferentes puntos de vista sobre el mismo tema y potencialmente ayudarte a decidir cuál es que tiene más mérito.

Para ti como consumidor de noticas, ?qué tanto valor agregaría el poder preguntar información adicional a tu asistente virtual y poder entablar una conversación? ?Estarías dispuesto a pagar por una suscripción al medio de tu preferencia si incluye este servicio?
