Possible Digital Marketing interview questions that you can be ready for!

If you are looking for a job in the Digital Marketing field, here are some interview questions along with their answers that will be very helpful.

1.    In short, what is digital marketing?

Digital marketing is all about brand marketing tactics via online channels. It includes various methods and techniques like SEO, SEM, Link building, Email marketing, PPC, etc.

2.    In what divisions can you label digital marketing?

To simplify it, digital marketing can be divided into two sections:

·      Inbound marketing refers to the technique whereby one can take up the assistance of social media, webinars, e-books, newsletters as well as the increase in the number of clicks on the links i.e. PPC.

·      This helps a customer to learn regarding the company and all the products offered by it.

And

·      Outbound Marketing is a marketing aspect that deals with reaching out to potential buyers through digital platforms, calls, email, and placing advertisements.

3.    What is SEO? What is a keyword and how important it is in SEO?

Search Engine Optimization or SEO is a technique in digital marketing that allows increasing the website traffic quality through organic search engine results. Search engines like Google are constantly crawling websites looking for the best content to show users who type keywords into the search bar.

Digital marketing uses the keyword for user convenience when searching to find specific information on a search engine. For a better ranking in SEO, keywords are important and the place of applying keywords in content will reflect site ranking too.

4.    What are the different types of SEO Practices?

There are four main types of SEO or search engine optimization, all aimed at helping you earn greater visibility in search results. The main differences have to do with how closely SEO tactics align with Google guidelines and how that ultimately impacts your SEO efforts:

Black hat SEO will get you where you want to go faster. It usually costs less because you are taking shortcuts to the top by going against Google Guidelines. In fact, many black hat SEO tactics are specifically called out in the guidelines as things you shouldn’t do. As such, they carry the risk that your website and/or content will rank lower, be banned from search results, or demoted the next time Google updates its ranking algorithm. (More on that below.)

White hat SEO techniques adhere to Google Webmaster Guidelines but usually take longer and cost more to implement. White hat SEO carries far less risk and tends to deliver lasting and compounding value over time. Most reputable SEO and content marketing companies use white hat SEO tools and techniques.

Grey hat SEO falls somewhere in the middle as these tactics are not specifically called out in Google’s Guidelines. Be cautious taking this path as it is not safe to assume that just because a specific technique isn’t labeled or mentioned as being deceptive and one that will get you into trouble, that it will shield you from demotion or penalty.

Negative SEO is the practice of implementing black or grey hat SEO techniques on someone else’s website with the intent of causing harm. Harming your competitors makes room for you to move up in search results.

5.    What are Google’s Guidelines?

Google Webmaster Guidelines spell out what Google considers good (white hat) and bad (black hat) SEO. They are meant to help you understand what can help and hurt your rankings.

While they are not laws with legal consequences, they should be taken seriously and SEOs should let clients know if they plan to step outside of the boundaries set by Google so they can assess the risks and benefits and decide for themselves what is best for their particular business.

The Guidelines are a series of online publications on Google’s support site that lay out general, basic, quality, and specific statements about what you should and should not do when designing, building, promoting, and maintaining your website. Lots of detail and examples are provided.

6.    What is Google AdWords Remarketing?

Google AdWords Remarketing is a targeted marketing strategy that helps marketers to reach people who previously visited their website but didn’t make a purchase. This type of marketing helps in targeting the right people with the right ad, at the right time.

7.    What are the limitations of Online Marketing?

Some of the limitations of Digital Marketing are:

·      Intense Competition: since online marketing is easily accessible, cost-effective, and more accountable by design, it has become a preferred method for most brands. It’s an uphill task to stand out and get noticed amongst such intense competition.

·      It can get overwhelming: there is so much information, so much data, an onslaught of tools for everything, too many options that it’s easy to get overwhelmed and become confused. It takes practice and experience to get your head around it.

·      Analytics is only as good as its user: sure, there’s analytics for everything but you can’t do anything with plain data unless you know how to read it and how to make good use of it. It can easily become misleading and you can get stuck in chasing vain metrics and burning marketing cash at the wrong places.

8.    What attracted you to the Digital Marketing industry?

Be honest here. Answer why you applied for this job in the first place? Did the industry’s reputation attract you? Talk about the potential that you see in Digital Marketing in both the near and long-term future. This would also help you showcase that you’re well-read and updated about your chosen field.

By asking this question, the interviewer wants to know your commitment to the industry and see what makes you the best pick among all the candidates available. Therefore, it is important that you show full commitment and enthusiasm for the industry.

9.    How will your experience benefit our Digital Marketing business?

All you must talk about is the personal experience, your past, and how your skills will benefit the business overall. Talk about your Digital Marketing story that helped you learn a lot of things and how this knowledge could help the business.

Focus on your unique abilities. Talk about how you are different from the rest of the applicants. In crux, talk in terms of skills, knowledge, and experience you have got so far. The question that you should really be answering is what value will you contribute as part of the team.

10. How do you stay updated with news and the latest Digital Marketing trends?

This question is asked quite often. Since Digital Marketing is a dynamic field, it is important to stay updated with the blogs, books, webinars, and podcasts to go for. Some of the popular resources to stay updated on Digital Marketing are websites like Mashable, a blog by WordStream, Social Media Examiner, The Neil Patel Blog, etc.

You must already be aware of these sources and if you’re not, spend some time on these and be aware of what these are. So that you don’t end up saying something that you are fully aware of, as a follow-up question can get you in trouble.

11. Do you think that Digital Marketing will completely replace traditional marketing practices in the near future?

This is a popular trap question often asked by Digital Marketers, that too not just in interviews. How you answer this question would reveal the level of your professional knowledge about the field. Hence, prepare your answer with your personal opinions too, and don’t just go with what you heard.

One thing that can safely be said is that it looks highly unlikely that Digital Marketing will completely replace traditional marketing in near future. Rather marketers are integrating both the platforms to optimize their marketing plans and for optimum ROI. Instead of replacing each other, both Digital Marketing and traditional marketing are becoming complementary to each other.

Good Luck to all and remember to always do your research before an interview, be comfortable and look confident.

***Disclaimer, these answers don’t guarantee a job, I’m just stating some of the frequently asked questions and the general knowledge answers that show you know what you are talking about.

Let me know your thoughts, do you have other questions that you think someone should know as well?
