America’s criminal justice system relies on public defenders to represent people without access to private attorneys. But public defenders are chronically under-resourced and overburdened with caseloads. In many U.S. jurisdictions, the police department's overtime budget alone exceeds the entire budget of the public defender's office.?Can technology be used to alleviate some of that strain and, in effect, make the criminal justice system more just?
