Is it possible for AI to take over our jobs?

ChatGPT has been making headlines for several months now, especially with Microsoft's recent investment in the platform. The latest version, ChatGPT 4.0, was released last week, just 3.5 months after the 3.5 release. One key difference between the two versions is that while GPT-3.5 is a text-to-text model, GPT-4 is more focused on data-to-text, enabling it to handle not just text but also images.

Meanwhile, Microsoft has integrated the same language-learning model used by ChatGPT into its core products like Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams and Outlook. MS Copilot has even been developed to code - Your AI pair programmer.

Experts have identified the top five job categories that are most likely to be replaced by AI:

  1. Technical (programmer, software engineer, data analyst)
  2. Media (advertising, content creation, technical writing, journalism, graphic design)
  3. Data (accountants, traders, marketing research analysts)
  4. Financial (financial analyst, personal financial advisor)
  5. Language (customer service, teachers, lawyers)

Should we be concerned about the impact of AI on our jobs?

Throughout human history, technological and scientific advancements have continuously progressed human civilization. The industrial revolution led to the transition from creating goods by hand to using machines, while the automobile revolution replaced horses with cars. Computers and the internet have also brought about significant transformations in various aspects of human life. While some jobs may become obsolete due to these changes, new job opportunities also emerge.

However, the real question is what are the limitations of AI??

The current ChatGPT 4.0 and the previous ChatGPT 3.5 are both offline data models, which means any information that appears after October 2021 will be unknown to ChatGPT. Therefore, there are already knowledge gaps. Why hasn't ChatGPT connected to the online world? This is hazardous territory. GPT, a language model capable of producing human-like text, needs to be trained on vast amounts of data. The quality of the output depends on the quality of the data. How much online data has been verified?

To effectively work with AI, we need skills like good logic, critical thinking, comprehension, and solid knowledge. These skills will help us drive AI rather than be tamed by it. Ultimately, persuasive communication skills will also be crucial in persuading others to embrace and use AI in a responsible and ethical manner.

The other thing I've been wondering about, is how do we ensure AI doesn't perpetuate the existing biases and structural inequalities? As these will be built into it through the data it consumes and the basis of it's "intelligence". Might be one to chat through over coffee :)

Curious times indeed. I see AI opening doors, or a can of worms, to potential ethical and legal questions. A bit like social media and the regulations appearing as a result of misuse, AI already helps with concerns like social media policing but very likely cause some issues of its own.
