'Possibility' Thought-Starter

One of the most exciting, but also slightly terrifying things that happens when you decide you're going to intentionally reshape your life, is you have to work out what shape you want this new version of your life to take.

Maybe you've tried to do so?

It sounds easy. I can attest, it can be hard and a little confusing.

If you're like me and love a new year because of the hope and possibility for change anything 'new' suggests, you may have taken the Christmas/January holiday time to start the process of rethinking or questioning your current career trajectory. You may have started examining where you spend your time and energy and thinking about some 2025 bucket-list items to tick off.

One activity that can help but sometimes hinders when you're on a reshaping quest, is engaging others to learn more about how they live, and gain an understanding of how they make a change. This can be a great strategy and highly worthwhile in gaining feedback on how others view you, what they perceive to be your key skills, any blindspots and your unique attributes.

However, it can also be a frustrating experience. Many of you will be like me.

  • You haven't followed a simple career path
  • You've worked all over the industry, marketplace, global and skills map
  • You're good at a lot of things and you love a lot of things.
  • In fact, you're spoilt for choice because you can turn your mind and hands to most things.

And while this is a great problem to have, most of the time, when you're trying to navigate your next move, it can be super frustrating.

And this is where the 'other people' thing becomes a problem.

When seeking input from others about what you might do, people may helpfully say things like 'just follow your passion', or 'what do you really want to do'. Umm, ok thanks.

For some, the answer to these prompts, may come easily. But for those of you looking for a different role, a different way of living, renaissance people, generalists, or people who have experimented with several careers because you have a lots of skills and interests, guess what?

You don't know the answer. Well, not immediately.

It's going to take a bit of work. Some exploration and some experiments are needed to set your direction. But where to start?

I advocate 'Start Starting'

And to help you start, I created a simple tool called the 'Possibility Thought-Starter'.

How does the Possibility Thought-Starter work?

This tools works to help you to help you think about options, rule them in or out and then asks you to create an experiment to test and validate your 'in' ideas. It's high level because the intention is to help you think through ideas, to conduct high level, quick tests and then decide if this idea feels like it's directionally something you'd like to explore a little more, or something you'd like to take forward. From there, you can start to plan your next steps.

Using a simple tool, you're going to have a better sense of who you are and support to start imaging the possibilities for what's next. You can create your own version of this tool by simply drawing or creating a digital version of this image.

Or, if you'd like one that's been done for you, and supported by instructions on how to use it and how to set up experiments, DM me and I'll send it over.

This is one of the tools I share in the 'Career on your Terms' program I run which is set up to help you ask better questions to help you reshape the career and life you want and then arm you with the tools and confidence to set about doing so.

I'm in the business of creating a life that feels good to you rather than a life that looks good to others. Let's chat if this is on your 2025 list too

‘Experimenting’ is exactly how I’ve described my current stage - it’s helping me navigate possibilities instead of overthinking them. Great tool. Thanks!
