‘The Possibilities of Paper’ with GF Smith
This summer, we were approached by G.F. Smith to submit a response to their brief ‘The Possibilities of Paper’ where we were invited to re-interpret their new book, The Collection 2020. We began by analysing the book itself, its form, and qualities and exploring what it is about the book and its design that makes it so iconic.
As a team, we evaluated the physical qualities and explored a multitude of approaches inspired by the book itself, all the while keeping the brief ‘The Possibilities of Paper’ at the forefront of our mind.
A key way that we can begin to consider paper as being kinetic, is through animation. In the modern world, we take recorded motion and animation for granted. We became invested in the idea of creating an homage to traditional animation through the craftsmanship of frame-by-frame animation and original animation formats such as flipbooks or zoetropes.
A key factor in our decision to pursue the format of a zoetrope was the physical construction of the book itself. As designers, we spoke about how you often might find yourself playing with the G.F. Smith book during team crits and moving its long spine into a circle formation. The way the pages fan out immediately connected us to this idea and a will to reimagine the book as this classic animation device.
What we believe to be one of the strengths of this project and a valuable lesson for us as a studio, is that the outcome of this ongoing project is not predetermined. Our approach to learning through experimentation means that our next steps are informed at each stage by a lesson previously learned.
We look forward as a studio to showing you in 2021 how far we take this brief and the outcome of our experimentation.
