Positivity: how to achieve it

Being positive

Positivity is all about looking for the good in everything and being grateful for what they have. People who see the glass as half-full see the good in everything instead of seeing it as half-empty.

Positivity does not mean you don't experience negative emotions or struggle with pessimistic thoughts. We all experience negative emotions. But positive thinkers do not let their negative feelings control them.

Their solution-centered approach prevents them from dwelling on their problems. They don't let their negative thoughts creep into their minds and always find the positive side of life.

The Best Way to Be More Positive

Fortunately, you can take steps to help yourself become more positive in your daily life.

Listed below are several suggestions to help you become more positive.

Practicing gratitude

Jot down in a gratitude journal what makes you happy or grateful, and make a list of things you're grateful for. Your observations don't need to be original or earth-shattering—they could simply be something as simple as your cat nudging against your hand when you're trying to do your job.

Your attitude will naturally shift when you focus on the positive things in your life.

Embrace anticipation

Researchers have found that looking forward to something positive each day helps with improving moods and reducing stress.

Make sure to look forward to something every day, whether it's visiting your favorite bookstore, having coffee with friends, walking in the park, or reading your favorite book. Keep yourself positive even when things don't go your way by doing this.

Become mindful

Practicing mindfulness includes paying attention to your thoughts, sensations, and environment. It can improve your mental health.

Whenever you feel stressed or overwhelmed, take a few deep breaths. Once you can identify your thoughts, you can then actively replace them with more positive ones by noticing how your body feels and hearing the sounds you can hear.

Let's smile

You can still feel better by smiling, even if you're not happy. Smiling releases chemicals in your brain that make you feel relaxed and happy.

Next time you feel down, try smiling for a few minutes and see how it can lift your spirits. Not only does it help induce positive feelings, but it also helps people see the world in a more positive light.

Self-talk is key

Your thoughts about yourself and the world are influenced by what you say to yourself, and self-criticism will make it hard to see the bright side. It's been proven that switching from negative to positive self-talk can help with your emotions and stress.

Positive Effects

Being positive has many physical and mental benefits..

  • Generally, people who are positive have better mental well-being. Positive people are less likely to suffer from anxiety or depression. They are also more resilient. It can be helpful to be more positive during difficult times.
  • The ability to find joy in everyday life and be spared the negative effects of stress and negativity is also linked to positivity.
  • Positivity is associated with a healthier life expectancy and less cardiovascular problems.9 Positive people tend to live longer than their pessimistic counterparts.
  • Relationships are healthier and more fulfilling for positive people where conflicts are less likely.

The Danger of being less positive

Being positive has many benefits, but it can also lead to depression and anxiety when negative thoughts are experienced.

Having a pessimistic outlook also makes it harder for you to take care of yourself physically. Negative behavior, including eating nutritious foods and exercising regularly, is often neglected in addition to feeling more stressed in general.

The lack of positivity may also negatively affect relationships, as negative people are harder to spend time with.

Getting motivated to achieve your goals is difficult with less positivity. Negativity undermines your sense of self-efficacy and leaves you feeling you will not make a difference. Negativity, especialy when directed toward yourself, impairs your ability to set goals and find the drive to achieve them.

Positive energy can also be contagious. When you're around someone with a negative attitude, you may feel the same way too. The cycle of negativity can become difficult to break.

Positive Thinking: Is It Possible?

You might be being too positive if you ignore or deny the existence of negative emotions out of your need to be positive all the time. People who experience darker emotions or difficult experiences feel shamed and unsupported when they suffer from toxic positivity, which is known as toxic positivity.
