“Positivity is a choice”

Illnesses and losing people whom we love dearly are real, whether we like it or not.

In Singapore, about 39 people are diagnosed with cancer every day, 15 people die of cancer every day, and 1 out of 4 people may develop cancer in their lifetime. As a financial consultant who works closely with clients, I constantly reiterate to my clients the importance of having adequate protection (especially critical illnesses).

In March 2020, my heart broke. I received bad news from one of my oldest clients, his wife was diagnosed with early-stage cancer. Right then, I thought about how I always worry and fumble over small matters. In the grand scheme of things, the smallest things didn’t seem to matter anymore. I have my health, my family, my tribe and my career. And I am so grateful for this.

After I read the message, I immediately called my client to ensure them that I will be there for them and will guide them through the procedure to file the claims for his wife’s health and life insurance policies.

I was extremely relieved that we have done the needful and that the families’ insurance were taken care of. She has a health policy which will cover 100% of medical bills in Singapore. Thankfully, she also signed up for a life insurance policy which covers all stages of critical illnesses, in October 2019.

Her health policy’s claims procedure is via electronic submission, so it is straightforward. It is a relief to know that my client will continue to be covered for her future medical bills as she had insured herself when she was in good health. Thus far, she has claimed $236,800 from her health policy for her treatment, surgery, chemotherapy and follow ups.

For her life policy, we had to submit medical reports, test results, doctor’s memo and claim form for the insurer to process before approval. It took us almost 2.5 months to have all the documents in place for submission.

My clients and I journeyed the last 8 years together, from strangers to close friends. I am truly thankful that they always make time for me and I appreciate the connection. It brings me personal fulfilment to know that I am a trusted friend, on top of being their advisor.

I want to make them happy in my small ways so I sent a card and gift, and brought food to their home so I can bring a smile to their faces. Most importantly, I want their claims experience to be speedy and smooth, so they need not worry about it on top of everything else. Every 2 days, I will check my system to see if there were any follow up on the life insurance claim. Finally, the claim was approved! I immediately called them to share the good news!

I was so overjoyed when they expressed their gratitude!

Presenting the cheque meant so much to me as I know that the amount will go a long way for the family. Knowing that I made a difference brings me immense satisfaction, I cannot ask for anything more.

When my client shared her experience coping with the mental exhaustion, the side effects of chemotherapy and the constant fear and stress, I was devasted. How I wish I can lessen her anguish. I cannot imagine the anxiety that the family will go through mentally, emotionally, and physically. It really surprised me so much how my clients can be so positive, despite their circumstances. Positivity is a choice. Indeed, my client truly embodied this positive spirit! I know that no matter what unfolds, they will brave it strongly together!

On the contrary, most of us are blessed with good health. Because of this experience, it really reinforced my belief to stay healthy and never take my health for granted so I can enjoy what life has to offer!

To date, I am taking care of 465 families. Every day, I am looking forward to building new connections, educating on the importance of financial planning and adding value to my clients.
