#PositiveVibes - Turn The Beat Around

By John R. Nocero & Ana Rios Quinn

The VIBE: Getting comfortable with change. If you don't like the music, change the sheet

John: When you think about it, it is amazing that people are uncomfortable with change, even though it is the only constant. I really think that people will really do more to avoid pain than to seek pleasure. But, it is learning to be grateful and see the opportunities that present themselves in all situations. There will be times in your life where you love what you are doing. Then years down the road, you say, okay, what’s the next challenge? Maybe it is changing employers because another can offer you more opportunity for growth, help you refine and improve your skills or maybe learning things you didn’t know before. Maybe another time it is changing relationships, because the two of you don’t want the same things. You may have at one time but you don’t now. And you know what? That’s okay. Because over the course of life, the more you acquire skills, knowledge, enhance your talents, work on your as a person, the more value you can personally add to your organization, and the better all of your relationships will be, professionally and personally. It’s important not to pull the plug on your dreams. Once you do, you lose hope. As David Deida says, you must be willing to change everything about your life. Ana, you are a master at change management. How do you deal with change and what do you tell people who are struggling with change?

Ana: Agree, change is a constant and has been around since the beginning of time. It is a dynamic that doesn’t discriminate…it touches every person, across all generations, from every race, culture and religious belief. The impacts of change can be positive, negative, neutral or even seamless. It can happen slowly, moderately or instantaneously. And everyone deals with it differently. Why? Because we as human beings are complex and respond to stimuli differently. Key to confronting and embracing change is to do several things: 1. Accept that it is a constant, it will continue to happen. 2. Embrace your experience with change. Reflect on how you have managed it in the past and apply your lessons learned in forward motion. 3. Welcome the opportunity to grow, mature, learn, gain wisdom and expand your capabilities, both personally and professionally. 4. Act with a sense of community. Help those who may need support, provide guidance and encouragement. Learn from those more experienced / wiser than you. Working together, everyone will benefit.
